Which secondary school did you attend?

I went there.

What years were you there?

95-00
I believe Mr Burton isn't too well, I heard he passed away a few days back whether that's true or not.

Good God.

Burton arrived at the school the year before I left. I still have his comments in my autograph book.

He was still there when my son went to the school (1993-1998).

Burton was a good teacher but a bit too much in your face for the likes of my Son. Son was fast tracked by Burton for the Maths set and turned on him when my son got bolshie about it all. Son didn't want the pressure of taking his GCSE too early and Burton never really forgave him for not living to the potential he saw in him.

I knew he had left due to ill health last year but I hadn't heard he passed away (if true).

Burton will always be a good teacher, but he was a bit like marmite in how pupils perceived him.

-- Tue Aug 03, 2010 10:36 pm --

Mate, was Dave Walmsley the head there?

He was when my brother was at the school (2000-05) but left before I joined. (Can't remember what year Walmsley left though, I'd have to ask my brother but he's currently sleeping)

Dave Walmsley was a lowly history teacher when I was at Sale Boys Grammar. I liked history before he taught me but his passion for the subject rubbed off on me. He was a great bloke, very funny and used to produce the end of year Summer Review in which places were highly coveted because Sixth Formers from Sale Girls Grammar were included.

He got excluded in his last year. Burton even came round to our house the year before and pleaded with Lee to behave himself, and to stop the fighting. Can still picture Burton now in our front room (which was a bit odd considering he had taught me too).

Lee hated him at that point. Burton was piling pressure on him and the visit only made things worse. Burton was trying to be "mates" with Lee and it went down like a lead balloon. It just came across as incredibly patronising.

Lee got over it eventually, and despite only managing one GCSE (in Maths) through the pre 16 class at Bury College he has done very well for himself since. Now earning very good money.

I think education is good, but there should be different outlets for those that are bored with it before the standard leaving age.
