Who did you play with or against in school or youth football who made it big time and what were they like as youngsters

I had a kick about with current Burnley player Josh Brownhill a couple of times at Birchwood. His older brother Joel was in my year at school and we were on opposite teams in a 6-aside league where he absolutely skinned me a few times!

Great guys and City fans as well.

Steve Wrigley.
early 1970's him and his mates played
with me and my dad in King Georges playing fields Ashton.

He was 1 year older than me,he was an absolute amazing dribbler, ran rings around all of us,he joind Palaces youth team/set up,they had a big reputation i was told as a kid.

he ended up at Forest when Cloughie was there but a bit part player if i remember correctly, ended up on the coaching staff at City too under Pearce

Gary Gillespie ex Liverpool and Scotland defender played for the same youth team as myself.
He was a brilliant midfield player at the time.
Great guy as well.In the same class at High school.Well liked by all.
Played against Alan Brazil and Roy Aitken once in their Celtic boy club days.
Brazil was an amazing player, only bettered by John McCluskey in the same game.
John I think was George's brother. He was unbelievable that night as well.
In the same game I was marking Joe McBride Junior,ex Everton and Hibs winger.

I knew Steve from school, also a year older than me. He wasn't happy when I shouted at him taking a corner for Pompey "Oi Wiggy you ****".

I played with a poster on here also at school in my year who moved around a few league clubs in the UK and America....when I say played what I actually mean is ran around behind him ;)

we lived on small shaw lane and my dad used to take me to the park most nights after his work,Steve used to come around from some houses at the bottem of king georges with a load of his mates and play with us,i remember one lad we called " peanut "

My dad grew up in Barrow in Furness and played Saturday and Sunday football right through his childhood and into his late teens. Said he regularly came up against Emlyn Hughes as they were about the same age (lived 2 streets apart) and he was a right big head even then then. Liked to leave the boot in too.

I played against Craig Dawson a few times growing up.

He played for Stand Athletic over Bury/Whitefield way. A bit smaller and podgy back then but was still a stand out player.

Use to play against Clive Wilson at Openshaw Technical college at dinner time 5 aside games was a great lad and player
I played against his brother Gus. He obviously wasn't as good as Clive but he still was really decent and a good lad as well.

Nicky Reid at Chorlton High School. Remember in a lesson talking about our future job prospects he would always say he would be playing for City. Smashing lad and very down to earth. Also there was Mike Barnes, younger brother of Peter who was also a cracking player and on City’s books. No idea what happened to him though.

The best I played with was George Clegg for Woodhouse Park in the early 90s at under 12 and under 13. He was a level above anyone in our team and the league as a whole and regularly played in higher age groups. He is a big City fan but got scouted by united. He went on loan to Royal Antwerp and Gillingham before transferring to Bury.

Wigley!

Knew him, too, and went out with a girl I knew. ;-)

Played against Nicky at the representative schoolboy level. U-16s IIRC. I was at Sunderland at the time and he was already at City.

Played with Andy Goram (GK) at Oldham and John Lukic (lived with him, too) and Terry Connor at Leeds. Trained with the First Team, too, which was packed with internationals of the day, but never played in a game with them.

Played with Steve Kinsey at City for a bit, but always thought he was a bit of a Twat. Didn’t really know him that well, tbf.

Played with Kaz Deyna & Ade Coker in San Diego (Sockers) and against Rodney Marsh when he was Player-Manager at Tampa Bay Rowdies.

There are others whose names escape me now, but that was all a lifetime ago! I turn 60 this year, so most of that was 40 yrs ago!!

Played for Chadderton Colts as a kid in the early 70's, we played on the pitches just next to Boundary Park Oldham and got free admission after our games
i was always substituted for a younger kid called Carl Halford who was the son of Bernard, the City secretary for a lot of years
He was signed by City but ended up with a career outside the First Div with Bury and Stockport
I met him at a party when he was playing for Bury and they had been drawn against Liverpool ( McDermott, Dalglish, Kennedy et al) in the League Cup and he was telling me how he fansied their chances as Liverpool wouldn't be up for it on a wet Tuesday at Gigg Lane, wonder how that went?
Nice kid but a cheeky twat, - so long ago, like a parallel universe

Ronnie Healey who played in goal for City for a short while in the very early seventies went to my school Newall Green. He was a few years older than me though. Every year they used to have a teacher's v the final years football team game. Mr Roberts the games teacher brought Ronnie along one year. I'm sure he did some minutes in one of the team's goals for a while but my memory may be playing tricks on me it was a bloody long time ago now lol.
