Who is bigger, Arsenal or Celtic globally?

Celtic. Don't under estimate how popular they are the farther you travel.

-- Mon May 06, 2013 6:41 pm --

Celtic are a bigger global brand by far.
Pretty random thread though, even for a Bank Holiday.

Correct. And if one day they happened to be in the Premiership the 'Irish' connection in the USA would be truly huge! They are serious club with a serious history.

Arsenal.

I would love to see Celtic and Rangers join the Premiership just for the fun of seeing them both relegated to the Championship in their first Season.

i think people are underestimating the pulling power of celtic, they play in a tin pot league which certainly doesnt help, but i dont think arsenal would ever get near to taking the 80 thousand plus to i think it was seville for a uefa cup final which celtic did.

if celtic were in the english league there support would take some surpassing, i dont know if that makes them bigger though.

Yet Celtic's average attendance is less than ours, Rangers (who are in the third division) and they only filled 70% of Parkhead in this years title winning game.

They aren't even the biggest club in Scotland.

Interesting question and depends on what you mean by bigger. I would have thought that more people claim to be Arsenal 'fans' but if we're talking about people who actually have some sort of 'connection' to the club, however tenuous, I reckon Celtic win hands down.

I was going to say Celtic have more die-hard fans easily. Arsenal have a lot more casual supporters worldwide.

Like someone said if Celtic had the benefit of being in the Prem, they would be one of the biggest clubs in the world because their brand is so marketable, imo.

Their outside support usually isn't for footballing reasons too, it's mostly just because of the Irish connection. For me that doesn't mean they're a big football club, it just means people like the symbol of Ireland.

I'd bet most of the people outside Scotland who support Celtic don't watch the games, they just have some vague Irish heritage and own a Celtic shirt or two.

Every jock you meet on holiday supports Celtic, not every English man you meet on holiday supports Arsenal so Celtic.

Greater London has twice the population of Scotland LOL

Arsenal happen to be the biggest club in London and have a huge following in Africa and Asia.

Arsenal by a country mile............

Exactly

An important question still has to be posed and that is, "who gives a fuck"? Scottish football is the toilet of Europe. However they decide to structure the leagues, it will never be exciting, nobody outside of the UK has any sort of passing interest. And Arsenal are dictated to by the balance sheet and therefore mid-table or top 4 is the best they can hope for. So, who gives a fuck? Globally? Cafflicks love Celtic. And er, well er, Arsenal don't really have anyone who doesn't have an N-postcode.

I've travelled extensively in most parts of the world and Arsenal are a far bigger brand than Celtic will ever be. I've been nowhere (except Scotland and Ireland) where anyone gives a fuck about Scottish football. City are already a bigger global brand than Celtic.

It's a non contest. Arsenal win hands down.

Over here you see plenty of Arsenal tops on the locals, along with the Rags, Chelsea, Liverpool and now City. They don't show SPL games on TV here either. I had a mate from Glasgow here that went to see Celtic v Rangers being streamed on a laptop in a pub and only 3 people turned up to watch it.

Celtic tops are only seen on the odd Irish backpacker/expat. Infact the majority of support abroad for Rangers and Celtic is from the expat community and then it's because the actual team they follow is shite. If they were only half as big as they think they are they would be financial giants in Europe.

I have a couple of friends who claim to be 'die hard Coventry and Celtic fans'. We were in Amsterdam for a weekend and they were angry and confused as to why an Irish pub wasn't showing the Auld Firm Derby but instead had Ajax on.

Delusional.

Very random thread. But still, Arsenal are the bigger club by a long, long distance. I think the answer you get depends on who you're asking.

I work with a good number of African's - all mad on footy, speaking to them all, they ''support'' either united / Arse / Chelsea or City (strangely no Liverpool), then they support Barca or Real in Spain, Juve or one of the Milan's in Italy.... they have a team in every country!
A new member of staff the other week, saw my City t shirt, introduced himself as a Blue - and then admitted he used to support Chelsea but not anymore, he's now a Blue.... (I should get him to come on BlueMoon ;)

Yet travel to commonwealth countries like Oz, NZ, South Africa, Canada and you will find thousands of genuine Celtic fans who have emigrated / kids of fans who have emigrated. I see loads walking around Boston wearing hoops shirts.

Boston's a special case though, a good percentage of the population has Irish Catholic heritage, their basketball team is nicknamed The Celtics, its colours are green and white, if a Bostonian was going to support any football club in the world, it would be Celtic.

Hi MES,

I agree with you, but you can also aim this at the Irish too. All my family and friends follow Celtic (infact you tend to find people will wear a Celtic shirt around town to prove they're Irish) but they support an English team like City, the rags etc.

You tend to find die hard Celtic/Rangers fans from Scotland who might force their kids to wear the tops here but as watching SPL games is unheard of here and the EPL being shown everywhere, eventually those kids get older and want to be seen wearing an English teams shirt.
