Who misses the football special?

Only ever went on 3, all scary as fuck.

Leeds away in the fa cup, dips when we just missed out to them in the 70's & the '81 final replay.

My mind playing tricks on me here. In 1990 i got a train from cheadle hulme to an old toilet derby, 100% from cheadle hulme and it was rammed with blues.
As we passed through levenshulme i was advised to keep my head down as a few windows went through from reds on the platform. In my head we got off at a station for (what seemed ) a short walk to the ground but couldnt say what station that could have been on that line?
Stockport to Warwick rd, then run the gauntlet except one year when 50 Rangers fans travelled on the train with 50 of us and we had them backing off all the way up SMattBusby way

I've always had a talent for recognising significant English landmarks yet whenever I looked out of the window, I could never work out where the fuck we were, as we always seemed to travelling via disused goods lines.

For the 1-0 win at Millwall in 87 we somehow travelled direct from Stockport to New Cross Gate seemingly without even touching London
I got the services but remember being escorted with the special after to New Cross Gate. We ended up getting the overland to London Bridge that was described in the Guvnors book.

I was at Huddersfield train station a couple of years ago when a train arrived carrying a load of Chelsea fans. It was a really old train with a catering car on. A bloke in chef whites was talking to the station staff. They must still have the odd train for football fans

I would have loved to travel to the swamp on a special getting off right outside the shithole......now that would be interesting
In my early teens would collect programmes, my dad gave me a few from the 50s. I had one from the home Derby in 1957 which was poignant as it had several utd players in who were to die at Munich the following year. The away Derby must have been soon afterwards as their was an advert for football specials from Central to OT. Can't understand why they no longer use the station at the swamp as ot would be a great way to shift thousands of fans quickly.

I remember the police escort to New Cross Gate and the City fans whistling the BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER KWAI, which looking back was both amusing and original

Don't miss the specials but would love to experience the Blackpool Belle just one more time before departing this world.

Got the midnight mail train from town into London for Bournemouth in the mid eighties must of taken over seven hours stopping at every city , town , village and sorting office on the way . Four of us went on a family ticket Transport police got on at Basingstoke plain clothes as well let us go for the front we’d shown. Got the special back in half the time.

Quite possible. The specials to Old Trafford Halt mainly just ran from Piccadilly and Oxford Road but they did have spells where they tried extending regular services from places like Crewe and Stoke to carry on to and from the ground. Not had any services running up there at all now for several years.
It seemed to be a ‘football special’
