Already mentioned but Gene Hunt (and by association Sam Tyler in Life on Mars which I preferred to Ashes to Ashes) and Robbie Coltrane as Cracker.
The bloke in Cracker wasnt a copper, he was a psychologist
That reminds me, Bonehead and Foyle in the Bullshitters.

Balls. He's not even the best in the precinct.

Ooohhh, youre so wrong.....initially I didn't care for the character, however,he grew with the show, the complexities of his life and his demons coupled with his ability to always get his man was fantastic viewing - I went through every emotion with that guy, both him and the show are sadly missed - it will never be beaten.

Can't believe that in 12 pages no-one has mentioned frost. Like a few others of the genre, his flawed personality is part of the appeal.
When i was much younger i also loved columbo. No one ever gave the shambolic quiet man a hope of solving the crime but he was so much sharper than anyone gave him credit for.
