Who was the best Sherlock Holmes?

Really enjoyed the Robert Downey Jr films. In middle of watching the Cumberbatch box set.

Both really good, not seen any of the others.

Basil Rathbone was the best Sherlock by far and Nigel Bruce was the best Dr Watson. No-one else could "mumble" like him. It always made me laugh when Holmes said "hello" when he found something interesting and the Dr thought he was saying hello to him. I can't bear to watch Benedict Cumberbatch in anything because he has the most horrible eyes and it puts me right off.

the rather too rotund Ian Carmichael!

Going off topic slightly in true cellar tradition. I always liked Ian Carmichael in most things he did, but specifically because he was in one of the greatest British comedy films ever made. School For Scoundrels, with Terry Thomas and Alistair Sim. Fantastic film, I might have a look on Youtube later to see if it's there.

I've no real reason to post this, it's got nothing to do with the thread but sod it, pure enterfuckingtainment!!!!!

Yeah, definitely Brett. The fact he had manic depression makes his portrayal of Holmes somewhat uncomfortable viewing now but I believe it made the portrayal even more convincing.
Fine actor and a shame he died comparatively young.
