Why are there so many accidents between J18 & J19 of the M6

Having been involved a very bad accident on that stretch which we were incredibly lucky to survive, I've often wondered why this stretch is so bad. My theory is that it's straight, pretty featureless and certainly on the west side, you can't see much. So I think people just get lulled into a sort of trance-like state where they lose concentration, switch off and perhaps start thinking more about being close to home that what's going on around them.

This is exactly what it is. I'm a hgv driver and I'm stuck in the traffic every Friday between 18 & 19. As your approaching said junctions all you see are fields and in general at 1st glance the traffic looks like it's moving very well. People wanting to get home naturally put their foot down but then boom!! The traffic piles up and you hit it all very quickly resulting in you braking pretty harshly and if your not concentrating you can easily end up slamming into the arse of another car.

There are 2 motorway service stations in close proximity (sandbach & knutsford) which won't help either as loads of drivers simply cannot merge onto a motorway in a safe manner and that can cause carnage.

J15 is always an accident flashpoint. It's haunted I'm sure.

The M6 carries a huge volume of traffic, including a considerable amount of heavy goods vehicles. The flow isn't helped by those HGV's who think they are not quite so heavy overtaking those that they think are genuinely heavy, taking 5 miles to do so and therefore reducing the motorway to a single lane for everyone else.

Quite a generalisation and over exaggerating the 5 miles too. It takes less than 40 seconds to overtake another hgv vehicle safely and that's if your only doing a few more mph than the one you want to overtake.

Nearly everyone drives these days, and that means there are a lot of low intelligence drivers on our roads, people who find it difficult to plan ahead, foresee the consequences of their actions and who have little more common sense than a child.

On a very crowded bit of motorway there will always be quite a few of these people around, and so lots of crashes happen.

I bet you still wear driving gloves don't you?

There is some shocking driving though.

Not long ago we were in lane 1 of the M62 when some absolute loon in lane 3 cut directly in front of a large HGV in lane 2. The HGV driver had to slam his brakes on so hard that his cab was bouncing about like a jack-in-the-box, and I honestly don't think he missed the car by more than about 6 inches or a foot. When he sounded his horn all he got back was the finger from the overtaking motorist.

If that guy in the HGV had been just a little bit less attentive, the whole lot of us would have been spread across the road like jam, and the Yorkshire bound side of the M62 closed for hours.

And if he was carrying a full load of sheet steel there's s good chance the poor bloke would be dead.

Cutting infront of a hgv vehicle is one of the worst things a motorist can do as the motorist has no clue what the hgv is carrying.

This happens a lot approaching motorway slip roads unfortunately though.

I bet the HGV is carrying a substantial amount of wank mags. ;p
