The thing with Everton is that they've always been a top flight club and had a fair amount of success over the years.... rich in 'history' they'd say - and to be fair, that can't be denied.
The problem I have is that somehow they value THEIR history above other teams who simply didn't have quite as much success.
Every club has a history, and many have been long esablished. Very few clubs are fortunate enough to have 'glory years' - the majority never really have much success at all. Does that make City any better than Rochdale? no. Does it make Everton any better than Scunthorpe? no.
Everton are very lucky to have experienced some great times. Their best times might be behind them, or they may well be ahead of them. The same can be said of all clubs - we simply don't know.
Everton fans (some) now seem to believe what they are going through is 'awful' and City have no idea - rich kids letting it all go to our heads. Well, no, we've BEEN down in the 3rd division, we've experienced shambles after shambles. We've been there - through NO fault of the fans.
We now have a rich benefactor. Everton had one too - in John Moores (of Littlewoods fame). In his day, he was a big shot, well and truly above 'local businessman doing well for himself' status).
These are all 'fortunes' (by that I mean good and bad luck) of clubs. Nobody has a right to start saying Everton have a richer history than Villa, or City, or Spurs etc etc.
It's this aspect of some Everton fans that troubles me. City and Everton have much in common in being in the shadow of other clubs for a fair period of time. Much more so for City than for Everton, but still, both are second fiddle to their neighbours.
Both are from working class, tough regions, with 'salt of the earth' type fan bases (historically).
One club has been turbulent (City), the other more stable. One club recently very lucky (City), the other not so. That's just life.
I just wish some Everton fans could accept the current situation with some grace.
As for allegations about City breaking rules to sign Lescott? Well, if City broke rules, Everton should have taken it to court and won. They didn't. Ergo - allegations are unsubstantiated.
Everton, like any other club have a CHOICE to sell a player or not. If a player is 'unsettled' and has to be let go - that's life. If Everton was such a great place to play, players wouldn't get unsettled.
If City were perfect, we'd not lose players either, but we AREN'T perfect. If Man United unsettle Aguero and he leaves for United, then good luck to them, his motivation isn't with us. This is football as Mr Mancini would say.
And finally, City fans have accepted the reality of modern day football - the GAME is bigger than Man City and the GAME is now about highly paid primadonnas who are a joy to watch when playing well, and a pain in the neck when they are throwing tantrums. That's the same at United, Liverpool, City, Villa, Everton - it's the same the world over. However, some Everton fans are still under the illusion this is the 1800's and that players are born inside the ground, live and breath footballs and are happy to play for a bag of chips. It's a lovely notion but deluded.
Everton ARE rich kids in comparison with Rochdale. City ARE rich kids in comparison with Everton.
This is football. They need to grasp it.
