Why should we broaden our Global fan base?

I remember Croatian Dinamo Zagreb signed some Japanese player like 10 years ago... There were dozens of Japanese on each of their game in Croatian League.. it was same when first Japanese players started to join some Italians teams after their World Cup success.

like I said in another thread, David Silva has Japanese blood in him so why not just use that to get a following?

Right on. If you have Kun, Silva and say another Japanese star ( the most suitable and charismatic playeer right now is Honda) we will have a marketing coup in Japan.

Just imagine we will triple our sales just by acquiring Honda in parlaying the trio.

Man United signing Chicharito is a very good example of grabbing (even more of) a global fan base. Here in the states, you have a very large Mexican population. I don't think many of them gave a shit about the Premier League until that little **** was signed over there (most were Barca or Madrid fans). Then, it was "did you see chicharito yesterday?" everywhere I went. A new generation of Man United fans (plastic as they come) following one of their national treasures. I can only imagine what it was/is like in Mexico.

SPOT ON! Hate that SHITE. Fook me mexican football is shit as it is (cant really talk considering the MLS) but fookin hell I cant stand those band wagon faggot hard on mexican flag waving morons. cant wat for the end of the season to paint my car blue and make it clear which team has true flowing beautiful football. GAH!

gonna have a sit down now...

-- Wed Feb 15, 2012 8:48 am --

10 years has past since then but look at the Japanese League right now and its national team.

Likewise for China & India in terms of its economic power & clout & football fervor or interest among the potential fans (esepcially among the Chinese).

we can do but, with Honda it would be greater affiliation that the Japanese people with have with him as his nationality is Japanese and not Spanish. Like any person of any country they will take pride in someone who was born and raised in their own country becoming a world star.

As we all know, the Japanese are a set of crazy fans as in the full works obsession type.

China and India are the emerging big markets and ones that will need to be penetrated if we want to move in the right direction to increasing commercial income growth. Those that think we are doing a rag thing and don't like it, there is no choice and is what's needed to become a truly global name in world football. We have raised our profile in these countries over the last few years from the Sheik's takeover and the influx of stars but still a long way behind the likes of the rags and bin dippers. Hong Kong is rag country (I have too many friends from there) but further south it is more varied so good for pushing the brand forward in these areas.

The problem is that although China and India account for half the worlds population neither of them can produce one decent football player

Thats what they say in basketball. Look at the New York Knicks. Where would they be without Jeremy Lin which is a classical case of stereotyping or characterising what a 'basketball player physical attributes' should be.

A great headstart to understand is read and cogitate on this wiki piece on him

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Lin

Perhaps then we can correlate why there is a dearth or lack of Chinese Players locally. A possibility?

Just how many shirts got flogged in Beijing when we got Sun Jihai. No Chinese players at The Swamp as I recall so we should have had a free run. Can't remember being invaded by hordes of Chinese tourists stumping up at CoMS with bag loads of shirts, shorts, hats, tees, dog collars etc!

Thats what they say 10 years ago. . But the economic landscape has changed. Chinese tourists are a plenty on the continent (Paris, Venice etc.) why not Manchester rather than London?

The best way that the club can secure growth in foreign markets is to concentrate primarily on the USA.

The rise of "soccer" in America has been predicted since The North American Soccer League in the 1970's, but I believe that football is on the verge of becoming a force to rival their indigenous sports within the next 20 years.

Interest in football is approaching critical mass - the utd Chelsea game at old trafford earlier this season attracted a live audience of four million and the wide availability of European games, increasingly on the more mainstream channels, means these viewing figures will continue to grow, especially with the US's qualification for each World Cup virtually guaranteed. The proliferation of the playing of football among the nation's youth with continue to have a drip, drip effect, as will the ever increasing standard of the MLS, fueled partly by quality (if slightly past their best) Eurpoeans after one last pay-cheque.

There are several reasons why this market is tailor made for City. Firstly, it is relatively virgin territory so we are not competing against the prominence of utd (and to a lesser degree Arsenal, Liverpool & Chelsea) over the last 20 years to the same extent as in more established markets. We have a much better chance of making inroads into this territory, especially if we market the club right, something I believe we are already doing admirably and appropriately - utd's marketing looks a bit turgid by comparison. If we succeed, it is a very wealthy market who will hoover up merchandise and be much less inclined to buy counterfeit gear than the fans in asia, for example.

Football is about to become massive in the US. If we play our cards right, this could be as big a long term revenue stream as our deal with Umbro, for example.

Go City!

Good post ^

What got me was the other week whilst watching UFC live on Fox (on a stream) every now and again adverts would pop up advertising the next Live Premier League game.

This show was to an American audience and one of Fox's main messages was the fact that they were going to be showing an EPL game the next day.

America is a big market we are hitting and will continue to hit (There is a reason why our players are tweeting about watching NFL and video's of our players training in an MMA gym)
