It’s a podcast from Dan Snow’s History Hit. His guest is a former soldier and now an conflict academic and PhD and he talks about:

Dan talks to Mike Martin about the reasons humans fight, why they are willing to die for their countries, and how ideology can make someone blow themselves up.

Just listened to it in full now and I think the guy is rather brilliant. He appears to nail what’s actually going on, on the ground in Helmand, Afghanistan as well.

If you have a spare 35 minutes then give it a listen.

Really is worth the listen for anyone interested in:

Evolution
War
Politics
Afghanistan

And a few other things.

Always wondered about this very subject.
It seems humans kill each other a lot, usually through greed or revenge, in fact humans kill everything except their dogs and cats

I like this, these young Royal Marines (under training) mustering their kit on the edge of the railway platform as the train pulls in.

Just listened to that very fascinating, I would recomend people take the time to listen to it.

Some studies say it is because primarily of two key aspects of humans and other primates we are fierce territoriality and living in social groups. Across all mammalian species, conspecific deadly violence is highly correlated with these two factors.
Add to the fact we are inheritently the most murderous species on the planet, we are the only one that kills everything else species wise, including us, and not for just survival, but for food, sport, entertainment, teritory, vengence
We are the most relentless yet oblivious killers on Earth.

A quote below from Physcologist R. Douglas Fields, Why We Snap, book .

"Carnivores kill for food; we kill our family members, our children, our parents, our spouses, our brothers and sisters, our cousins and in-laws. We kill strangers. We kill people who are different from us, in appearance, beliefs, race, and social status. We kill ourselves in suicide. We kill for advantage and for revenge, we kill for entertainment: the Roman Coliseum, drive-by shootings, bullfights, hunting and fishing, animal roadkill in an instantaneous reflex for sport. We kill friends, rivals, coworkers, and classmates. Children kill children, in school and on the playground. Grandparents, parents, fathers, mothers--all kill and all of them are the targets of killing…”

We kill to protect or expand our percieved social tribes and teritory.

In peaceful societies where the social group is settled the need to fight diminishes, if that groul is threatened then we turn to violence at times
