Will Smith slaps Chris Rock at the Oscars

Modern social media nowadays means you have to pick a side and defend it to the hilt.

why not see it as Rocks joke probably went too far (but as a comedian you have to push the boundaries)
and you can also understand why Will Smith reacted like that- your wife being insulted and embarrassed about her condition.
I think you are trying to split the middle. Even if Rock went too far, which he didn't, there is no understanding why Will reacted the way he did
I do think Smith should get some form of punishment for hitting him, that simply can’t be allowed.
Agreed.

On the road for 14 hrs today, so had a moment or two to discuss the whole pulava…

I’d love to know what Jada said to Will between him laughing it off and getting up to slap him.

Methinks Will is a smidge of an underling in that relationship, and Jada knows it.

Disclaimer: I’m not a fan of Jada, because I think she is a pseudo-psychiatrist who thinks her shit don’t smell! I’ve seen her “Red Table” show and she is cringeworthy, in a Dr Phil kinda way.

I think he is beholden to her, and she knows it, and if we all saw and heard what transpired in those few seconds, I think it would be illuminating.

Before @kaz7 accuses me of victim shaming, I’m doing no such thing. Rock made a joke about a very sensitive personal issue and her husband reacted…I believe, on her insistence.

They’re both lucky Rock is taking the “discretion is the better part of lawsuit & police report” approach, because satire is protected First Amendment speech in the U.S. and it was clearly meant to be humorous, as clearly proven by Smith’s initial reaction.

Much as I’m not a fan of Hollywood gossip, it’d be nice to see & hear that short gap between word and deed!
I actually don't think she said anything. I think he just saw her look and autopilot reacted.

Also, it's quite possible she thought her husband was in a bit that she wasn't pricy too. Co after Chris said, "Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me" she laughed. I assume because she too thought it was a staged joke.

However, once she realized it wasn't. I.e. When Will started cursing... The fact that she didn't react at all. Didn't acknowledge or even look at Will, was kinda disappointing. It struck me as she being such a narcissist that she was trying to distance herself from the incident rather than trying to get through to her husband.

Anyway, can't blame her too much. Wills actions were so irrational that it's possible she just froze and didn't know how to act.

In a country where people get offended as quickly and as often as Liverpudlians, shouldn't the host be expected to apologise for his part?
Publicly mocking a woman who has lost her hair through a medical condition is pretty scummy.
Except he didn't do that. He made fun of her hair style. Which he and a billion other people in didn't know was due to her losing her hair.

Had he made fun of her game of throne attire. Would that have been fine? Coz that's in essence what he did at worst.

I didn't know much about Smith and his missus and that so called comedian even less so.
I don't really care about the antics of these people. Yesterday on BBC they aired complaints from loads of normal people who were rightly pissed off about the extensive coverage given to these pantomime characters and their attendant support staff including the LAPD. Satis recte but the BBC got the usual excuse makers from the sports dept.

I’m in the “King beating the Court Jester for daring to make a joke his Queen didn’t like” camp.

If a simple look of disapproval can elicit that response, the depth of what was going on is waaay deep inside them and their relationship. Sadly, they’ve already laid that bare and it’s clear who is in control of it.

Some men are simply bewitched.

So it has become clear that Will was in the wrong but it begs the question..

When is it right for a man to step in and defend someone be it a wife/family member/friend/stranger?
