Of course they should. As long as the joke is very well written and delivered without malice. What should be banned is the lazy stereotypes that we had during the 60's/ 70's and early 80's. Thankfully that lot have disappeared.

Once you start banning jokes where do you stop?

I like this one...my midget girlfriend has been feeling a little stressed recently so to cheer her up I bought her some flowers, chocolates and ran her a nice hot sink.

Offensive? No. making a joke about midgets? Yes. Banned? No. Of course not.

There are some older black people get offended by younger black comedians using the n-word. Whose offence/freedom of speech should take precedence?

The controversial aspect is the intention behind the joke, not the topic of the joke. That's why the "certain subjects are off limits for comedy" is always such a bullshit line. Josh Widdecombe spends an hour every week on prime time Channel 4 doing jokes about disabled people without being disabled himself.

Maybe Chris Rock's Oscars joke would have been more acceptable if it had been delivered by Matt Lucas? Or Gail Porter? Or does it have to specifically be a black woman with alopecia before it's acceptable?

Rock's joke was considered unacceptable because it was seen as publicly bullying a particular person with a medical condition without her consent, not because it's a joke about a medical condition and no-one should ever talk about that. If the same joke was told in the context of a comedy club that she had chosen to go to, it would be fine. Because it was at the Oscars, it wasn't really fine (assuming Rock knew about the condition - and even if he didn't, you could argue that for such an important gig, he should have done a bit of research about the people he was roasting). The times that Frankie Boyle has got into trouble, it's not been the subject of his jokes that have been the problem, but the fact that he's been seen to be publicly bullying someone who didn't ask for it (Rebecca Adlington or Katie Price's son - Katie Price herself would be fair game as a public figure, and obviously many jokes have been told about her without controversy).

Racism is everywhere, it's in comedy yes but it also isn't the sole concern of one race, if you change the brunt of these jokes to black people it gets sticky. I don't want comedy banned but I would like to see the obvious double standards sorted out.

Plus an open relationship I’d expect is so they can both sleep around, sounds to me like she wants long term relationships with other guys but want the ‘Smith’ name.
He’s a soft tart and wants to fuck her off plus fuck knows what her son thinks of her fucking his mates…. That’s just bizarre behaviour.

Couldn't post the video on here it was too large, I thought was stupidly daft and a bit of a laugh poking fun at the situation, I'm not really interested in searching this thread anymore and not to check if it's been posted, just looked it up and found it on YouTube a proper shite channel name but maybe peeps will think it's funny maybe they won't here goes.

I don't want to say this is a stupid take, so I'll say this; White people tell Black jokes. Black people tell White jokes.

The telling of the joke is not the issue, it's how it's done. Bill Burr is a master at telling racial jokes because of how the joke is framed.

Chris Rock's joke was about a 'character' who was a tough somabitch, who shaved her hair to dislodge her femininity and lead a team of hardened soldiers. That's who the character was.

His joke wasn't about alopecia as a slant seeming as he made a docu about Black hair and addressed alopecia in it.

If someone wants to take offence and absorb a perceived slight, they will. But more reflective listeners/ watchers will absorb the greater angle.

By the way, he told Jada Smith he 'loved her' before the assault, so it wasn't mean as a direct insult.

Smith does not want to be in that marriage.

It's toxic, clearly.

I think comedians should have a moral barometer within them to know how far to go with jokes.

I've no problem with jokes about Jews in general but joking about Nazi concentration camps in WW2 (Absolute human misery) is completely disrespectful and hurtful that horrific subject should never be joked about.

I'm not saying it should be somehow illegal but it should be a line that should morally never be crossed.
