If you mean America, it is more than possible. Obama is not proving to be the saviour his supporters expected. He has no credible deficit reduction plan in place and the monitoring credit status agencies are starting to become jittery at the possibility of (at one time unthinkable) downgrading of America's credit status. China, although stalling at the moment due to the West's depression, will, I think become the dominant superpower in the future.
As for any other country or area prevailing, it is doubtful. The islamic nations are relatively backward industrially compared to the rest of the world and are too steeped in religious dogma to progress and make a difference in the near future. South America is gaining rapidly, but again I can't see any change in the status quo coming from this direction.

If the US government keeps on doing what it's been doing it will collapse eventually. The deficit, debt and unfunded liabilities are staggering. They will likely print themselves into ruin.

If they make a real effort to reduce the government enormously, cut taxes drastically (across the board) and return to the free market principles that made them an economic powerhouse in the first place they will likely recover and become more prosperous than ever after a short correctional slump. Politicians are unlikely to offer it and voters are unlikely to go for it however.

They will have to give up their empire either way.
