Will we win the league this season?

VVD and Salah ain't getting younger. And Alisson has started to pick up injuries more often than in the past.

Edit: Liverpool have 3 CBs now (?), as the 4th (Leoni) did his ACL. 2 of them, Konate and Gomez, don't have the best fitness record, and VVD is 34.
Alisson is one of the most injury prone goalkeepers in world football. Brilliant player but he picks up at least one injury every season that will keep him out of action for at least a month.

Thiago Silva was putting in top class performances for Chelsea at the age of 38 so I expect Van Dijk still has a few seasons of top quality left in him.

Salah does look like he is on the decline but watch that one come back to bite me.

For what its worth I think what you see of arsenal now is what you are gonna get. They aren’t going to improve (or probably regress) much at all. Liverpool are a bit more of an unknown. They don’t look great at the moment but if it clicks they will be dangerous

If I'm being absolutely brutal, these would be the concerns:

Right wing: I think Savio/Bobb are erratic, and neither is top quality right now. Bernardo can play there, but he's physically on the wane. I could see cherki/foden taking the position and sort of rotating with each other, but cherki is also an unknown in the prem. The position is not locked.

The other midfielder: Im not overly impressed by reijnders so far, he's useful around the box but he's not the most physical and gets bullied in challenges, needs to figure that out. In long term he may become top, but won't be this season. I doubt Pep will play foden/cherki in the 8, so the other options become Bernardo/Kovacic/Nico G, all of whom are not top level at this point I think. Reijnders has the shirt, but its feeling like he's going to have a grealish/Mahrez first season where he needs to learn to play with pep, some good moments along with some poor ones.

Right back: Khusanov seems excellent defensively but offers 0 going forward, which means our right winger will always be more isolated and ineffective than our left winger, who will have either o reilly or ait nouri to compliment him. I think a knock on effect of Khusanov every week will be to amplify the right wing situation. Nunes/lewis maybe help that, but are half the defenders Khusanov is, and we will concede goals on that side if they play. I don't think either is the ideal solution and we should have bought a rb, but Khusanov clearly the best option for now.

Rodri: Do we have the actual rodri back, or a lesser version? We don't know right now, and even a lesser rodri is better than the vast majority of midfielders out there, but he might not be able to carry us like he did. I think this is a big question and we'll see how his body holds up.

Goals: We need people other than haaland to score. They didn't really last season. I think foden will, but we still dont have a ton of goals from the wings, nor from most of our midfielders. If haaland scored 40 goals, no problem. If he gets injured or goes through bad form. Might be an issue.
Yeah, its pretty much all fair enough. So many of those if's and maybe's could end up positively and then we could challenge for the league and other trophies:)

Have you watched any Liverpool games this season? The fire has gone out.

City and Arsenal fans will be hugely encouraged by Liverpool's performances. You can never be sure how the Champions will react, and so far their performances have been awful.

If you have not seen it yet, you should read what Liverpool superfan Carragher has to say about Liverpool. This was posted first on the Liverpool thread.

Good post. I think Liverpool's start to the season is similar to ours last season where we somehow ended up top of the league before a bad spell we didn't recover from. The results they've got don't reflect the games on the whole and they've looked like they'll leak goals (if not goals, then at least a fair few chances each game).

It remains to be seen if they'll click into gear when their new signings have settled. But as it stands, they don't look anywhere near untouchable.

Arteta's entire philosophy at this point is that if you're steady enough over a five year period maybe one year the steadiness will be enough. I suppose there's a logic to it, but it's not the heights of the best managers.

100% agree their defence looks shaky. But their attack on the other hand to me looks really really good. Salah yes will get older but look at Chiesa, Gakpo, Isak, Ekitike, Wirtz when up to full strength, that young chap Rio. I truly believe and was the first person after Brighton away to say we will win the league but i think it will be tough, very tough and thats not even mentioning Arteta’s cunts.

liverpool have 2 issues

benching McAlister their most solid midfielder last years and playing Slazibaloh (spent wrong but fuck remmebers how it is) at RB

he has tinkered with a midfield that won them the league and if he carries on they will carry on dropping results.

Arsenal. are piss and wind and will flounce again at some point

We can win it at everton away

The fire was never there.

Last season they earned 84 points. That wouldn't have won the title in any of the last 9 seasons.

They didn't win the title last year, we just lost it and Arsenal did what Arsenal do!

We don't need a 100 point season to beat them this year.

I don't think there will ever be a harder won title than 18/19 in my life, in this or any other league. 98 points, a single dropped point in the run in and you lose, a Liverpool side that would wipe the floor with this Liverpool side.
this, nowt will come close to the knife edge blow for blow of that race, the pivotal moments Sane’s goal vs them & Stones clearance, Vinnys Goal, that was something from the ages, that game at home against them was arguably the beat two sides to face each other in the history of the premier league rewatch the technical skills the pace power of both sides wea earned that win they lost one match that year to us got 97 points and still didmt win that shows the level we were at and tbf they were at.

Best two sides and best quality game played on English soil imo.

I still have a recurring nightmare of the stress of those months January to May 2019.

I never want to experience anything like that again, but 2022 came close.

I don't like last day must wins, give me 2018, 2021 and 2023 anytime.

Can we win the PL this year. A few weeks ago I thought emphatically no, but there have been little signs.

We need a decent midfield, settled defence and no injuries to Doku, Erl and Phil.

So to answer, I'm not sure!! I'll review after Christmas!

Without doubt some of the football played between peak Pep & peak Klopp was absolutely breathtaking. Two teams full of superstars and the best thing is we both just went at one another. It was like two heavy weight boxers just swinging wildly at one another until one found the knockout blow.

That game at the Etihad wow and the fact that neither team dropped a point in the run in was just incredible. Thankfully the right team lifted the trophy but begrudgingly that Liverpool team won a lot of respect from me after that season.

Either of those teams would walk this current league.

Compare it to the current Arsenal games and the football is horrific

Sadly I think this could finally be Arsenal’s year.

Slot is Liverpool’s Pellegrini and isn’t a top elite manager.

If we click and Pep works some magic, we could be in the mix.

I honestly think that game was the best game of football I've ever seen. The speed, skill, tactics and ability of every player and coach on the pitch was astronomical. Fair play to Klopp, no one else will ever push Pep to the heights we reached. That season, City and Liverpool were easily the 2 best teams in Europe.

This new City seem to get a lead, appear comfortable, drift for a period and then pay the price.
Al Hilal
Brighton
Monaco

Will probably happen several more times before the seasons over too
