Will we win the league this season?

Will we win the league?

Maybe - we're still very weak on defense mostly due to lack of pace.

I think we're unlikely to beat Liverpool for the title - and may well finish third.

The transfer window is still open - so maybe we'll fix our RB problem - in which case - we might win the league if Pep plays the right players and those players are free from injury.

Specifically - at CB we need to start a pacy CB (preferably two) against most sides. Because every side knows that a ball over the top is our biggest weakness.

And we're weak on defense at LB - in particular - and RB, somewhat less so, because Nunes is Ok-ish on defense. This takes into account our signing of Ait Nour which - for me - is a big mistake.

Depends. I need some info first:

will we stop inviting teams for open door counters?

will we train to pass it low into bottom corners instead of kicking it to the keeper's hands?

will we defend as a team and also be sharper in 1v1s?

will our keepers do their job with passion?

Not if we 'defend' like we did last season. And that looks like the blueprint for this season judging on those CWC games we kind of turned up for.

No, can see us being in a battle for 4th again.

I think Rodri will still have fitness issues after such a serious injury, which will ultimately kill us the most.

I also don’t see Cherki playing that much. Certainly not a starter alongside Marmoush, Foden, Reijnders and Haaland like a lot of people are expecting on here.

Basically it boils down to whether people think we can win a league title with Gundogan as a starting midfielder and whether Foden can return to his 23/24 levels. The answer is no to both for me.

Unless things change a lot I don’t think we will win another trophy under Pep

That's just stupid.
Just an opinion going off last season and the CWC. We got new players in some look good to be fair but not world class some new coaches but still play the same way where average sides can beat us

So going off a season before we got the new players and it seems going off one game at the CWC,the coveniently ignoring the 3 games we won and all the good things we saw in those 3 games. Seems balanced and reasonable.

Liverpool
Arsenal
City
Chelsea

City and Chelsea to fight it out for 3rd and 4th. Potential to get 2nd if we can get control of games like we used to.

No it’s not going off one game the first game although we won it was dull boring watch we should have beat them by more and they had a few decent chances that another decent side would put away 2nd game was against a nothing team Juve played and won well but same frailties at the back was obvious to see and Al-Hilal we were poor again all playing the same way no change in style or tactics new exciting players left on the bench still playing old players that aren’t good enough anymore. We haven’t had a left back in years now we do but don’t have a right back

Transfer windows closed then, and squad compete. Bugger.

its quite sad how we arrived to where we are now compared to the heights we were in such a short time. after the treble win we should have done a huge window adding youth and quality and be more ruthless and do the same last summer. we could be in such a different momentum right instead of hoping to bounce back with a squad that still has serious question marks.

this too me is mostly down to Txiki, as a DoF squad planning is main part of his task and he kind took a comfortable approach not doing anything, brought some players in below the required level on top.
that summer of going for Belingham and then Rice and ending up with Nunes. its like we had the motivation to go big for elite midfielder and opted not to do it in the end. and then begging Walker to stay then bring back Gundogan next summer etc. lot of bad decisions culminated into this.

we were incredible in CL imo 21/22 and 22/23 and and brutal how much our level dropped from that to what teams did to us in CL in 24/25.

huge job for Pep too rebuild us tactically, no wonder he brought whole new backroom stuff in. up until know changes in the backroom staff was due to other cubs recruited our staff, this time it was different.

I think we're potentially better than anyone else except Liverpool.
Now the big — indeed huge — question in my mind with the dippers is this: their two key players, hands down, have been Salah and van Dijk (with Allison Becker in that mix, too). And that, in my opinion, has been the case pretty much since Mané left. Nobody else in that lot is in the same category, as game affecters and game changers.
Dipper fans celebrated like maniacs when they re-signed. But they are now both 33. Kev has only just turned 34 (birthday in June). Ok, very different role in the team, a lot of running involved, huge responsibility in creating situations with his passing, I understand that — but we considered that he was past it (or rather Pep/Txiki/Hugo did, not sure who had the final word, obviously).
I'm actually expecting a drop-off from both of them. Salah, especially, surely can't maintain the standard of last season? If they do maintain that same level, with the recruitments they've had, which have been good, they win it. No real question in my mind. If there's a considerable drop off of either of them, it becomes a moot point. They really are that important. If they both drop off in level, and Rod comes back as more or less the same player as pre-injury (not guaranteed), and Phil gets back to anything like the form of before last season (again, not by any means nailed on), then I think we win it. Our recruitments have approximately matched theirs, I believe, but there sure as hell is no Kevin de Bruyne in there; nor any Mo Salah.

We'll be right up there and that Juve performance was a sign of things to come. Far more confidence running through our attacking players and Rodri's return is crucial.

We just need to find the right balance / personnel defensively. Pep doesn't seem to fancy him but Khusanov could be a destroyer with excellent recovery pace in the right centre back position.

The problem is, I think, you need Dias there to lead the backline, which then means Gvardiol is pushed to LB.

We definitely need a new right back and I'd shift Akanji, Ake and Stones if we can.

I think we can but it a lot of it depends on whether we can sign a RB and whether we can fix our press so that we're not as vulnerable in transitions.

We have a plethora of attacking options and enough goals around the squad, it's whether Pep and Lijnders can devise a defensive system that can negate some of our issues.
