Wimbledon 2023 | Alcaraz beats Djokovic in the final

She gave as good (if not better) as she got in the press conference, calling the strawberry munchers a bunch of alcoholics basically,
Some people have short memories, remember all the kerfuffle with anyone Argentinian in the eighties ? That was minor compared to what’s going on in the Ukraine, she has every right to take a stand, her country’s existence is at stake. Just my opinion but athletes from Russia/Belarus should not be allowed to compete, just like in many other sports, then there isn’t a problem shaking hands etc
Not fair that a sports person who has trained all their life to compete are not allowed because of war and politics now if they come out a openly agree with the invasion then they should be banned but politics and sport should never collide .

Well Russian boxers are boxing all over the UK, USA etc, Russian tennis players are playing today at Wimbledon, they just don't show the flag but they're receiving money aren't they? Some of them still residing in Russia. So I guess some sporting organisations don't apply the same sanctions as the countries do. I'm OK with that personally. In my opinion its a dangerous precedent to start outcasting people from their professions because of politics.

But my point is your friend may have been happy, but ask families of the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi people if they were happy getting bombs dropped on them by countries who invaded them under false pretences? That's the reality of what happened. They lied about their motives of going there. Just because it was useful for a section of people, it was still based on a lie.

There's always going to be opposing views on these things, it all depends who you ask. There's also Ukranians in parts of Ukraine that want to be part of Russia and consider themselves ethnically Russian, I know actually some personally, although they may be in the minority. They don't necessarily agree the invasion is good though because it's obviously not. But neither was the invasion of Iraq, it may have been good for some, but not others. That's the way it always is with these things.

That's why I don't like taking some righteous stance that stops regular people just doing their jobs, especially when so much hypocrisy can be pointed out.
Don’t forget Bosnia and screbinnica when 8000 men and boys were slaughtered under the noses of the west and no one did fuck all aoary from put an arms embargo on everyone including the Muslims who had fuck all .

Shit on the shoe of Europe.

I'm in the same boat. I used to watch back in the days of Borg, McEnroe, Connors, Lendl, Cash, Gerulaitis (sp?), Becker etc. And the women's game, which was arguably more interesting as there seemed to be more finesse. But it's gone the same way as the men's now, power. And don't get me started on the grunts and shrieks they emit. It ruins the spectacle for me. I don't bother with it now.
Incredible.

I grew up watching Borg, Connors, McEnroe etc, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

However, the era of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic (even though I don’t like him) is every bit as good, if not better.

Back in the 70s, tennis only lasted two weeks and then everybody forgot it until the next year. Now we can watch all the majors and the Masters tournament and watching these guys compete against each other is one of the sporting highlights of the last 20 years.

And with players like Alcaraz, Sinner and Rune, we are set for at least another decade of fabulous tennis.

Now, cricket on the other hand - watched it avidly until about 2005 and haven’t bothered since.
