This is the first time in nearly a decade when Windows security and privacy issues have genuinely concerned me. I've used an offline account, switched off all features on install, turned off more manually and run some recommended scripts.... I am using edge (and a hosts file in lieu of an ad blocker) but for anything beyond the news and the odd forum I've now switched to Epic Privacy Browser. And still I find myself treating this computer as if it was totally open to prying eyes. It doesn't help that within a day of installing w10 I got my first malware in 5 years. I had to ran 7 (seven) security scanners to make sure all traces were gone.
Anyway, Microsoft's choices here could easily lead to millions of (mildly technical) people like me switching to Linux. I might very well do it this weekend, and just keep a w10 boot option for gaming.
But I doubt MS would care. They have seen the way the wind is blowing. Google Play and Appstore make untold amounts of money for zero effort. The vast majority of people are ok with that model... moreover the vast majority of people seem to be ok with the fact that the average phone now knows more about you than the govt, nhs, your employer, bank and family put together. How many people routinely install apps blindly, happily giving access without checking. Not only that, but when was the last time you ran a security scan on your phone? Never? Because you know for a fact that there are no security issues, right?
