So; what happened to Windows 9, or did I blink and miss it?

Windows 8.1 is being regarded as such.

Can't argue with that, still using XP my main PC have some new fangled version on my Laptop and at work, which seem rather clunky I am sure there are some great technical reasons for upgrading but for now I will stick with XP

Since XP is not longer supported for security updates, are you not running a risk of viruses and such by running it?

Unless, of course, you're not going online with it...?

I have plenty of decent security programmes installed and scan it on a regular basis

It will be better than every version of windows before it, yet people will still swear blind that it raped their dog and XP is still the best.

CP/M mate. Can't be doing with the pretend shit when I can remember the real thing.

There is a rumour that it is because of the coding of some programs. Apparently some programs used statements in the code to determine if the Windows OS number begins with 9 so it can know if Windows 95 or 98 is being used. It was posted by someone on reddit claiming to be a developer at Microsoft so not sure how much truth is in it but it makes sense.

Urban myth. No truth in it whatsoever.

As we're getting closer to release, thought I'd install it on my main machine and give it a whirl.

Like the new/old Start menu rather than stupid Metro interface and splitting it onto the right of the screen. Just tried to do an Update through the normal method and was told that I wasn't allowed to do this any more because it's deprecated. Instead I had to use the Settings App rather than Control Panel which had me a bit irritated but to be fair they've upgraded the Settings App from Win8 so that it's half decent now.

On the Privacy front there's a staggering amount of data collected from your machine unless you manually turn it off and not just due to a pre-release version. I also thought that it was a bit naughty of them to demand that I sign in with a Microsoft Account at install that linked my computer to the web immediately, then had to go and change it to a local account in Settings. Very much a OneDrive upsell which would replace My Documents with a cloud based solution.

It's not a bad Operating System so far but Microsoft are continuing their march to unite all programs and data under one banner and I've never been a fan.

Has it brought Windows 7 a little closer to the Windows 8.1 user?
That metro screen really is horrible isn't it?

Yeah it's sort of abandoned the whole idea of the Metro screen as a place that desktop users will do anything but immediately skip past. The new Start menu is pretty nice

Looks decent enough and if it works it might be worth a shot.

This is Windows 8.1 but heavily doctored to have a 7 look.
