used it awhile, not bad. Uses less resources than Vista so older or slower machines can run it fine. Not sure I like everything about it but it's coming and Vista\XP are to be dropped so we better get used to it. Unless you love Linux or Apple

I am so pissed off with Vista Business I'm going to reformat my notebook hard drive (250gb of it) and manually install XP and all the software (with XP drivers) that came with it... checked with Dell already about this and they see no problems, although it's going to take me some time. I had no XP downgrade O/S option when I bought this computer back in Dec and Vista has had so many compatibility problems with old software I'm running it's unreal. Add to that it doesn't even let me manipulate old disk drives (and the data on them) fully, because it thinks I don't have permission, and it's a total joke - and yes, I've toyed around with changing the permissions and security options for folders, sub-directories, and so on and so forth.

Anyone else have any similar problems and have had to resort to a similar solution?

(am a bit shy to even go near 7 because of this, unless they've straightened everything out)

What they've done is get the bits that dont work in Vista to work in 7. What they have also done is take away the bits of Vista that do work, namely the visuals. 7 looks shite , but it generally works. I had it on my laptop for about 3 months and was happy with it. Lately it has been pissing me off so I put XP back on. The bit I do like about 7 is that it doesn't kill you machine in terms of performance like Vista does so a relatively average or low powered machine can cope with it. Which is good for users.

In terms of permissions of old drives you should be able to get access if you apply the appropriate permissions. If you really get stuck and fancy it boot from a Live Linux CD, then copy files from any location (Disk) to another location (Disk)

I'm using it now. I like it, but it seems to make my laptop fan work overtime. Don't know why, it makes my computer run quicker.

Its pretty much XP with Vista graphics/styles.

No. It's based on the Vista kernel so it's nothing like XP in terms of coding. In terms of visual styling alot has been dropped from Vista & has been made to look more basic so it isn't as flashy as Vista. Notification area has changed & introduction of libraries is a new feature. Not sure I'm keen though.

Vista & XP are fundamentally different, much the same as XP & Win98 being fundamentally different.

Functionality is way different, from memory management to Networking between XP & Vista. Windows 7 is based on the same core operating system files (kernel) as Vista

Windows 7 will probably get a good reception from the industry and the public and I think Vista will go the same way as Windows Millenium being brushed under the carpet as a flop. Most people will like 7, generally it works well and is light. It's worth the free download at least.

I too suspect that this will be the case. A friend of mine works for Microsoft & he says that they regard Vista as an embarrassment that they just want to go away. They can't admit that though can they?

thanks for the advice... I think I just gave up farting around with the permissions as I couldn't change them wholesale, so it was a real pain in the arse, and used one of my other machines which has XP on (although it's about 10 years old)

To be honest been lazy myself a few times and stuck a disk into an XP machine when Vista permissions 'play up' . A live Linux CD is always worth having around though if Windows ever fucks up and you need to access files on the Hard Disk. Pretty simples, set machine to boot from Optical Drive (CD\DVD), then away you go.

....I was meant to sort out a DVD of the 2001\2002 season ages ago. Haven't gotten around to it, sorry. You got sorted or still need a copy?

So....

Is Windows '7' the next version after 'Vista' then?

If so, How would I get it & how much is it?

My desktop Pc is Vista and I fucking hate it. Cant get old games to work and having problems already mentioned on this thread by others.

Fuck, just read on a Review that its not out for a couple more months.

Should be free for all Vista users if you ask me as an apology for Vista.

Vista = Looked nice, worked shite.

Looks like I have! Old age or drugs is my excuse.

Classic - sums it up nicely!

It wasn't due for release until 2011, but as Vista failed big time Microsoft pretty much got their arse in gear to hurry it along. Acer Head of UK Marketing let slip that they are due to ship systems with 7 around 23rd October this year.
I agree that there should be some upgrade discount or free upgrade for anyone that bought into Vista, I personally think Microsoft will do that but may be dependant on profits and as they have seen a dip for the first time ever in their history it may not be the case.

Link on the first post lets you download a full copy from Microsoft. It is licenced until June next year so it's basically a try before you buy. If you have more than one pc and want to try it give it a go.

Nice - so basically I can have it for free until next year and then they'll ask for the cash......

Hmmmm - Me thinks a download is in order for the weekend :D

Bye Vista.....

Windows 7 now officially scheduled for release to the general public on 15th October

There will be no cheap ugrade or free upgrade to anyone that bought into Vista.

Pricing for differing versions is expected to be substantially higher than Vista.

Once again M$ fcuk up

Yes, it is possible that it will cost more than Vista but i'm going to be one of those people willing to pay.

Being a Technet subscriber ive been using Windows 7 since a very early beta stage and have been very impressed with it. As with most beta's it was pretty buggy at first and I had a few driver issues, unknown crashes etc ... Since beta 7000 pretty much everything has been sorted ( which didn't happen with the Vista beta program! ). I remember testing the RC of Vista and was very shocked at the lack of performance and serious compatiblity issues, Microsoft being Microsoft decided to release it, everyone knows what happened next.

It seems they have spent alot more time and effort getting Windows 7 up to scratch, listening to what people are saying and actually doing something about it. I have it installed on a P4 3ghz which is a pretty dated machine. Everything I mean everything works alot faster than it did with XP or Vista, load times, video playback (HD), games etc etc.

I really don't mind splashing out for a copy of Windows that actually works well.

Its kind of like VW Golf's, Mk1 (Windows 2000) and Mk2 (Windows XP) were great cars! Lots were sold and lots and are still about today. Then comes the Mk3 and Mk4 (Vista & Vista SP1), people still bought these cars but knew they were quite frankly, a bit shit and fucking ugly. The Mk5 and the newer Mk6 (Windows 7), granted a little on the pricey side and possibly wont have the cult status of the Mk1 & 2 but are great looking, reliable, well built cars that will last for a very long time!

Not forgetting the VW Fox ( Windows ME )! Who actually went out and bought one of these? I can be pretty sure anyone who did, got rid pretty quickly!
