Anyone who's starting to get a taste for the grape, I'd recommend going to a local independant wine retailer to see what they have and to do a few wine tastings.
They tend to get in some good quality smaller producers that you can't get in supermarkest due to them not making enough volume. And I can honestly say a £10 bottle from these places tastes better than the £12-15 ones that are reduced to £8.99 in the super markets.
My local shop (The Vineyard) charge about £25 for a wine tasting normally involves 4-5 glasses of White, 4-5 glasses of Red and a dessert wine, with a bit of supper thrown in (hotpot etc..) It's not poncy but you get a bit of a description of the wine grape, region, producer etc..and it's all drinking no spitting in to buckets.
