How can you make one of these work as a modem for an old, cheap desktop computer that doesn't have any wireless capability? The ISP I want to sign up with gives you one of these gadgets but will it be any use to me?

You can buy USB wireless cards, that slot into your usb port.

Like that.

Or you can get one of these:

But i don't know where they plug in. These are just examples mind, i don't know if those particular products are any good

I assume you mean you will be going 'broadband' ?

In which case you need either a broadband router (wireless or not) or a broadband modem.

Most wireless routers have 4 sockets where you can connect directly using a patch cable (usually supplied with router). If the phone socket is near the PC you dont need to worry about using the wireless capability, just plug the cable into your network socket on your PC, and one of the ports in the router.

If you do want to go wireless it's easy to do either with a wireless USB adapter or a wireless PCI card (as long as you have a free slot in your PC).

If you want your PC to be wireless, you can buy a USB WiFi adaptor. These start at about £20.
If you want to run a wire, you can use an ethernet cable (basically a fat dial-up cable) which may have come with your router.
