Yes, I stand corrected, it is a tow-rope. There is a version "toe-rag", a piece of clothe wrapped around the toes as makeshift socks (often associated with tramps or poor people). Apparently, old soldiers reckon they were more comfortable on long marches.
 
To coin a phrase .. used with great effect to introduce a banal or cliched sentiment. Tongue in cheek, mayhap
 
This one’s an action more than a saying; but people aren’t using the two-fingers as a sign to say “fuck off” that much anymore, everyone has started using the American middle-finger “up yours” instead.

It’s a shame that, there is a long British history of sticking two fingers up as a “fuck off” sign.
I do that every time my wife turns her back to me...
