Did you know. A toe-rag was a piece of cloth tied to a length of rope and dragged in the water behind a ship. Crew members would go for a dump over the stern end, wipe their arse on the rag then toss it back into the sea to be cleaned.

Yes, I stand corrected, it is a tow-rope. There is a version "toe-rag", a piece of clothe wrapped around the toes as makeshift socks (often associated with tramps or poor people). Apparently, old soldiers reckon they were more comfortable on long marches.

This one’s an action more than a saying; but people aren’t using the two-fingers as a sign to say “fuck off” that much anymore, everyone has started using the American middle-finger “up yours” instead.

It’s a shame that, there is a long British history of sticking two fingers up as a “fuck off” sign.

I do that every time my wife turns her back to me...
