Christ, you've just answered a 40 odd year old question... I thought a public field was called a wreck not rec. short for recreational. Bugger me !!!!! BM's done it again.

Hey, don't quote me on the spelling and definition. I've heard rec, reccy or reccie, red rec - Labour council here? Words as well as definitions can vary from place to place.

Pleeeease, dont ruin it for me.

Now I think more on this, 'red rec' was the public field in Coronation Street - and actually this is where I got my definition, thinking the same as you that it was spelt "Wreck" prior to learning this.

"What and where is the Red Rec?
The Red Rec is short for the "Red Recreation Ground". Recreation grounds can be anything from a bit of tarmac with a children's play area (a few swings, roundabout, helter skelter, etc) through to huge grassed areas where football (soccer) pitches are marked out. In the case of the Weatherfield Red Rec, the 'Red' comes from the surface which is either red shale or crushed bricks packed down very tightly - but there is also a large grassed and woodland park area."

You're not from the North, then!

Behind my Grans house was the red rec. It is now called ten acres I believe. It was red because it was made of red clay from the clay pits and brickworks next to it. I used to lean over the fence and watch the blokes play when I was a little kid.

Half on that. When you want some of your friends cig or snout.
Mineral man. The bloke who sold fizzy drinks off a van. It never seemed to be mineral from a shop though!

"Rio Ferdinand had a good game today."

Can't remember the last time I heard that - I must have been a nipper.
