Looking for any thoughts or advice on the following.

I work in an office with 2 other girls. After a very long and successful career with no issues whatsoever at my previous employer I moved to this new place within the last year but it's not been what I thought it would be and have handed in my notice to go back to a similar employer as previous. Another girl in the office has also handed her notice in for the same reasons (basically no benefits at all and what we've found out to be a vile manager).

We work as secretaries for one guy and his wife is the manager, although we never see her as she has another job elsewhere.

The situation is currently pretty dire, I've been treated quite badly by the manager since I said I was going, the other girl quite less so. I don't really need to elaborate on all this. The manager though is very clever (sly/cunning) and has done everything by the book so she can't be touched though the way she has gone about it all is pretty sickening. I've already contacted ACAS about one situation she's manipulated.

However, something very interesting came to light on Friday. Basically, on uploading the dictaphone for files to type I've found an accidental recording (clearly in the guy's pocket) whilst at home with the wife/manager and right away I hear they are talking about me. They've made many derogatory remarks about myself and my colleagues, even slanderous to a degree.

My wish would be to not go back and get garden leave. Amongst other things they're saying we are doing a shoddy job and they've said I've not been any good etc (not true btw!) so why should i want to continue working for them for the rest of my notice.

Citizens advice has pointed us to law centres who specialise in employment law but they're not open until tomorrow. Just thought I'd get as many people's thoughts as possible!

As the recording was clearly a mistake and they were outside the workplace it wont do you any favours.

You are leaving so just relax and get the fuck out of there. I am seeing out 3 months notice at the moment. I have done fuck all in the hope they let me go so I can start my new job sooner.

No luck so far.

How long is the notice period you're expected to work?
I'd let them know that you've heard it and want to follow the company's grievance procedure. That way it is documented. Has the other girl documented her grievance? I would speak to ACAS again. They sound a hideous employer. Good luck with your new job.

They sound like United fans.
It’s always sad to know that there are some people who are desperately unhappy in their jobs. Hope your next employer is what you’re looking for. There are some great employers out there for sure.

Let them know you have heard the recording.
Turn up for work as normal every day but do as little as possible.
Move on and forget about it.
I wouldn't tell them about the recording but I agree with doing as little as possible. Then if things are said to you about your work rate, that's when you drop the bomb.

Oh and on your last day, brick the windows.....you know the rest.
Also photos of the wife would help us help you, shame you forgot them.

I’m sure they wouldn’t want the remaining secretary to know that they bad mouth their employees like that, so that’s really your only leverage. They might be keen on shortening your notice period I suppose, if they want to avoid a “last day grenade”.

Sadly this goes on all the time, even with bosses you think are sound, it might just be them letting off steam or, especially with small businesses, they don’t understand why employees don’t commit as much energy to a job as they do.
