Work....who likes it.

chefs work a myriad of jobs not all are restaraunt and hotels, did that for 15 years before I landed this job, which is more split between cooking and managing.

Plenty cooks/chefs get to mid 40s and decide the 90hr 6-7 day weeks are a mugs game and leave or move to better hrs
I started out as a commis chef at the Piccadilly hotel at 16, did the college thing but got sick and tired of 6.00 am starts and 2 am finishes and getting on the last 263 ( or was it 264 ) from Piccadilly to Sale with all the piss heads, druggies, prostitutes etc so moved on to industrial catering dealing with the boards of big firms, Shell, ICI etc, decent hours and decent wages. At the Picc anything over the standard 40 hrs was time and 1/16 th, then time and 1/8 th then time 1/4 and so on and so forth. To get a strait double time meant we had to work something like 90 hrs.

Come over, we’re going to start framing a new house in the new year, then it’ll be full on winter
Cheers but think -1 today was cold enough for me . That’s another thing , I don’t half feel the cold nowadays, especially my hands . We are working on 2 new build houses in Bowdon , 1 is basically finished and the other we are still 1st fixing. I had to go in the warm finished house today to a couple of minor jobs . I strung it out for half a day didn’t want to go in the freezing cold 2nd house .

-20c is about our limit, I’ve been on crews back in the day that wanted to work colder but I normally just let the crew decide. A strong wind will definitely get me leaving. Rain is what I really hate, way rather work when it’s snowing

Can't work in the rain. Your tools will get destroyed. That's why we call them beer clouds and not rain clouds.

At the moment I do yeah. Made a change earlier in the year after 10 years in offices and now spend everyday outdoors as an assistant solar installer. Just finished a big commercial job at a marine research institute this week. I stayed up there for 3 days out of 4 and last night was very fucking messy. A few shots from my travels;

What do you hit your Marples with..? Side of the hammer for me.
If I'm mortising out doors I use my estwing hammer or the meaty bit of my hand.
Just messing about not using a hammer. use it every day.
I have only ever bought two hammers in my life and that's only because somebody stole the first one.

I've had 3, Stanley steelmaster when I was an apprentice, then got an Estwing.
After 10 years use I decided to get another, which got nicked after a few days. I'm still using the first one over 35yrs later..!

I went about 6 months of finding work a real chore and was beginning to dread every day, 45 minute commute both ways in car when I would have preferred to cycle or walk the 10 miles. I was suffering with chronic sciatica and neck pain and dreaded having to sit down all day. I was fortunate that my work got me a standing desk in the office and physio which helped significantly. Then covid came and I’ve now got my home office with standing desk and I’ve never been happier, do miss my daily walk and football chats with a good friend but he also works from home now ten miles in opposition direction. I like the challenge of the work, some days are more exciting than others and often get complex problems to solve which is great. All that said, if I was to come into a life changing amount of money I’d relocate and wouldn’t be tied to a daily working routine, would have freedom to travel more (difficult with young kids) and travel home and away on my own terms, probably less overnight megabus journeys. To keep me mentally stimulated I’d like to get into statistical data analysis/ football scouting and do kids coaching, I love football as that’s where my heart is.
