Whose bright idea was it to stage this event in Doha?

I know it's only the heats at the moment but there are almost as many people on the track than in the stands.

The stadium was packed throughout in London for the last World Championships.

I suppose the bean counters will say it was a very bright idea to host it there, as I’m sure there is big money involved to host, as seems to be the way with most major sporting events nowadays. Easy to be critical, is what I’d say. As a track and field follower, I’d rather look forward to the great sport.
There aren’t many cities in the world that would get a turn out as big as London did for athletics.

Jacob I. a bit harsh on the DQ from what I saw - why would he intentionally step inside where he did, nothing to be gained, except increased injury risk. Some kind of shove the likely cause.
Holly B looked good in the pole vault though, and pleased to see Gemili get through. Lyndsey Sharpe will be gutted with that - I’m sure Caster Semenya will have had a wry smile watching that.
Be interesting to see how the marathon runners cope at midnight too.

There aren't many that would get a turn out as small as Doha either.

They're certainly not making big money on ticket sales.

They haven't taken into account the athletes either.

Competing in those temperatures can't be healthy.

You’re right, but I’m sure the local authorities over there are paying the IAAF big money to host. It may not be right, but crowd size for the events won’t outweigh that.
Some athletics events, notably the Rome Diamond League meetings for example, get absolutely paltry crowds.

Anyway, this event and the footy World Cup is clearly part of a strategy for the country.

Yes, be interesting to see how these Women Marathon Runners fair tonight. 6 laps of 7km, almost like 6 park runs b2b. Those 180 degree turns will take a toll.

Wow fair play to the guys and girls running the distance events in that heat.
40% withdrawal during the race from only 68 starters. It is obvious that even running the marathon at midnight that the conditions were less than helpful. The BBC spending a fortune on presenters to fill in between events and on pre-event promotion interviews with British athletes, most of whom are just there to make the numbers up.
