i am thinking to myself - why are the worlds best players reluctant to come to play in the premier league?

there have been a lot of attempts by english clubs to buy players at the top of their game, but i cant think of a one that has actually signed up.

if you think back to the likes of batistuta, del piero, van basten, fat ronaldo, baggio to kaka, ronaldinho and villa.

looking at the history of the league there have only been big players coming here when they have peaked and are on the downward spiral, the only exception i could accept is dennis bergcamp, although he played his younger years in italy and continued at a very high level far longer than most players do.

most of the stars of the premier league have 'become' great players through playing in this league e.g cantona, viera, henry, Ronaldo, van horseface, etc (and a few english players also spring to mind).

could it be due to the pace or physical demands of the league and these top players not having as much 'thinking' time on the ball or is the weather or the country in general just too unappealing?

thoughts please.

They dont like Holts bitter

Some of the best foreign players have come here but its a recent event as the Prem is now the most lucrative league

Shevcenko (cant spell it)
Essien
Torres
Ballack

Most would know its more difficult than there current league, and wouldnt come, because they don't want to be seen as not as good, as they've been made out.

Great post! Have thought exactly that myself! Given that it looks like, despite the wage, Eto'o is the latest to snub us I asked the same question myself. In the last 10 years, despite its wealth, when did the Premier League attract a Top 3 player to come and ply his trade on our shores? I can't think of a single one.

I think what we're discussing is the world's most famous players. Most people, myself included don't have enough knowledge to make such statements. Any scouts on bluemoon?

you make a couple of valid examples there, but if you break down the reasons they came and there is a general underlying reason behind each one.

shevy - mates with abram, loves ac milan and they needed the money so he did the hounourable thing - also he was shite!
essien - good up and coming player not fully proven at highest level, was developed into a decent player.
torres - bit of the same as shevy but he turned out good - but valid point.
ballack - came for the money, simple as that.
robinho - i think we all know the lad was baked into a corner and luckily we were there to help him.

im not trying to split hairs with you mate im just intrigued why there is never a straightforward transfer of a world class player to england without any baggage to it!!

Veron to United.

At the top of his came when he arrived.

i thank you for the valid example, but im looking more for why they dont come. is it the game we play, is it too demanding are they not up for it?

p.s veron was shite n' all! - maybe coming here is just too much of a gamble for top players - if you come to england and flop maybe it beomes hard to get your stock back up again?

The weather in Manchester has alot to do with it....I was in Madrid 3 weeks ago and the heat was a fucking joke..... i couldn't be bothered to have a ham shank never mind play 90 mins of football...and the opposite applies 2 hot blooded foreigners...as they can't get it up when they come to England as they cant find their man poles due to the cold...
