Xenophobia/nationalism would be mine. It means that you not only have to fight for your place, but is expected to produce 2X as much for half the approval. Especially when it's "accepted" xenophobia it comes into play - italians, spaniards, brazilians, germans etc are fair targets and it's very obvious from the outside. When a player fails, it's not as when a british player fails - it's a whole "god save the queen, rig the guns, blast those Guidos" sort of a failure were the entire press goes out of their way to slaughter any remnants of a good reputation. You do this to british players in some cases as well, but they have to reach a certain stature and become "too good for (us)" before the haymaking begins. It also seems as if there's a special delight in cutting down players from better footballing nations: brazilians can't cut it, italians are shit etc. Add the weather and it's a really bad climate to play footy in.
Case in point:
If Kaka came to City everybody except the Mancs would want him to fail and EVEN THE MANCS would find comfort in blasting him for being a brazilian if things went tits up. On one hand, not so good for City - but on the other, it'd be almost like a special little national holiday for Engerland. The Prem vs. Brazil, 1-0...
Crude but true.
