I downloaded Podcast, TvAnts and TVUPlayer to try and watch the city game and failed on off all the way through the game!

But picked up some unwanted files along the way, I have downloaded AVG and am currently doing a full scan, but don't really know too much about what do!

HAs anyone else experienced problems while downloading streaming software! I thought i read somewhere that somebody had inherited a trojan but cant remember where I read it!

Would appriciate any advice cheers!

Biggsy mate,

This is as old as the hills.

Web threats have moved on. The days of getting a virus by email or floppy are long, long gone. Simply by viewing an infected web page it's game over. Most of the time you wont even know you've been hacked\attacked and software installs in order to get your passwords or ID.

It's all about ID fraud and money now. Conning you into buying viagra, or some "PC Magic Software that has detected and will remove threats on your pc". It's all bollocks.

The public haven't cottoned on yet, but as more and more people fall victim to scams they will.

I'm a PC as the Microsoft Advert says, and I hate Macs but one of the facts is you don't get this bullshit using Linux or a Mac. Like Rafa said, "iz a fact". I'm not contradicting some of the arguments supporting pcs that I've put forward on bluemoon because I still believe if you know how to protect your pc you wont have problems, but for the majority of pc users the net is a risky place and getting more so.

.....see how easy it is! That could have been anything. Seriously look at getsafeonline.com which is a government sponsored site. Or google 'scareware' for more info.

download spybot (S&D) and run a scan with that matey

i used many streaming sites and never had any problems mate.....the few sites i have had problems with have been caught by AVG and quarrantined

i first came across tvants about 3 years ago, i had to get a new computer, my norton failed to detect something, however by helping norton through sending reports etc they gave me free subscription for a year, i dont touch it now but i must confess to using one of shadys links on two different occasions and i had no problems

Cheers fellas, yeah its as if some software producers actually make random viruses then send me pop ups telling me I need to download this software or that software to protect myself from it, a fucking joke, am getting advert pop ups and all sorts of shit!

I'm afraid that the only way to get proper protection if using a PC is to pay for the software that you need. It is much better than the free stuff. All these free versions you can get also have a paid for version. There's a reason for this... they offer btter protection! TBH, it's a small price to pay for peace of mind. I purchased Zone Alarm Pro as my firewall & antivirus (it uses the Kaspersky engine) & Counterspy as my spyware detector/remover. Since doing this I have not had a single nasty on my PC.

Generally yes the paid for versions are better, but I would still recommend AVG Free Edition over any other AV solution outhere, paid or not. With the best protection in the world it still is no guarantee, it all boils down to how you use your pc which is what the op was about. Bit like taking a stroll along the Reeperbahn without a raincoat on then wondering why your dick goes Cheesy (Cheesy > no offence mate).

The computer security industry is a reactive one, and cannot be protactive as it is impossible to know what virus or nasty script someone , somewhere will code until it is out there in the wild.

*I met a guy recently that downloaded all kinds of software worth thousands of pounds, "yeh mate" says I, "your pc will be full of viruses & other shit in no time and will need a reinstall sooner or later, or you will have to pay someone like me to sort it for you". "so what" says he. "half a day to put Windows, software & internet back on , job done. Don't need to pay anyone and I save thousands on software. End of". I couldn't argue with that logic!

Personally i've never had any worm or virus issues downloading and running sopcast , tvants or tvu player , and i've been using them long enough ........ although some people do reckon that tvants , especially , can cause a few virus problems.

Get your software from a good source, myp2p is ok. AVG used to give false positives with tvants, dont know if thats still true.

sounds like vundo..... download and use malwarebytes http://malwarebytes.org/ got rid of it for me...

What you've got is the latest scam on the net, scareware. It's a false message trying to trick you into paying for a rogue program which is the source of the message.

More info > http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7955358.stm

and this link > http://www.scmagazineus.com/Microsoft-report-shows-scareware-file-fomat-bugs-on-rise/article/130399/

Long story short, viruses are no longer a some teenage geek getting ego kicks out of writing some script. It's all about Identity Theft, and this type of threat which makes the authors money. Same way Nigerian email scams and email marketing to buy Viagra etc. It's all about the money.

Unfortunately if you're using Windows it's getting worse, although it pains me to say that. Apple and Linux users are pretty much in the clear.

You can't legislate for this, the best Anti Virus and Fireswall protection will not help. The scareware authors are quite cunning and crafty in the manner they deliver this software onto a users PC and more often than not using Peer to Peer or searching the net for dodgy content will guarantee this kind of thing.

I see this virus at leat 5 times a day, every day at work. Most of the time I can kill it. However it mutates almost daily. At the moment it's deadly and I've got to format 3 machienes later on today which I hate to do as it's conceding defeat . It's generally a bitch to kill and the latest version of this is in the form of Rootkits which are essentially invisible to the Windows API (application programming interface), in other words even taking the hard disk out and scanning it in a clean machine wont do anygood as Windows just wont see it. Then I use a Linux box to sort it.

Anyway enough techno bollocks. What you can try is this;

Download and run combo fix <a class="postlink" href="http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofi ... e-combofix</a>

Download and run Spybot > <a class="postlink" href="http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html</a>

Download and run BHO Daemon > <a class="postlink" href="http://majorgeeks.com/download3550.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://majorgeeks.com/download3550.html</a> (post what it finds and I'll take a look then advise)

Download and run Hijack This > <a class="postlink" href="http://majorgeeks.com/download3155.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://majorgeeks.com/download3155.html</a> (you'll need to do a scan , save the log into a text file and pm me the log, I'll look and advise)

If you try any of the programs and they will not run then the Rootkit is blocking them. You can try downloading AVG (not the free version but the Pro version on a 30 day trial and run the rootkit component). Sometimes if that fails then that is when you need a Linux box or BartPE to update registry permissions which are being denied, and to manually delete around 7 dll files with the uacxxxxxxx.dll id (random generated numbers and letters after uac). Dont go mad and search for uac and delete as this is a legit Vista App and NOT to be confused, the other two files are .dat and .sys

Empty all Temp Files and Folders
Use the Folder view option to show all hidden files, and to show protected Operating System Files. When you do that empty all Temp Files. For XP Look in Documents and Settings\what ever the user name is\Local Settings\Temp
also Documents and Settings\username\Temporary Internet Files - DO THIS FOR EVERY USER
look in WINDOWS\Temp
If you want to free up space at the same time delete all files showing in blue , starting with the letters KB at the beginning of the file name - these are redundant updates files and can grow over time. Check the C\Windows\inst folder, anything in there can go as well.

For Vista; C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files

also do the C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp Folder

If all that is too much, and you have a legit Windows, all your softwarea and data files backed up, and 24hrs spare over bank holiday to setup you pc again just format the thing and start again!

System Restore using a partion on the Hard Disk - will return the laptop to the condition it left the factory

System Restore as part of Windows isn't always a great idea. The virus simply wont go away, and if a virus is cleaned up fully then using system restore brings it back unless the restore cache is purged after virus removal then enabled again creating a clean restore point
