Why do you find those so strange? They've been around since I was a kid. They didn't do full teams back then as I recall but instead did three or four players from each side. I'm fairly sure I had Keith Curle and Uwe Rosler.

No not the actual premise of the power pods, just some of the resemblances are pretty out!
