The shopping list: City boss Hughes starts work on his Eastlands Galaticos

Manchester City have jammed open the January transfer window and their cash is already billowing out of it towards the Arndale Centre.

Having pledged not to pay silly money despite having the wealth of the Middle East behind him, Hughes splashed out £12m for Chelsea's reserve left-back Wayne Bridge.

And there's more of the same to come apparently with a host of Premier League 'stars' set to become Eastlands Galacticos for the sort of fees that should bring the north of England out of recession by the end of the month.

But will players such as Craig Bellamy, Scott Parker and Roque Santa Cruz really transform old City into the new United?

Bellamy has a Scottish Cup Winners medal with Celtic and was an unused sub in a losing Liverpool Champions League side, Parker was once the PFA Young Player of the Year while at least Santa Cruz won the German Double with Bayern Munich and the Champions League.

But between them they hardly boast a medals haul that merits the reported £40m they will cost and will just be leaving one struggling Premier League club for another.

At least Hughes will be able to free up funds by selling a host of players following Saturday's home FA Cup humiliation at the hands of Championship wallowers Nottingham Forest. No more of his squad will be cup-tied and so might appeal to the likes of round four certs Kettering, Torquay and Liverpool.

But who should go? And who should come in? Sportsmail is happy to offer Hughes some tips as to how to spend wisely - and the best way to recoup some of the soon-to-be-spent millions.

WELCOME TO EASTLANDS...Italy World Cup winner Gianluigi Buffon, rated as the best keeper in the world (especially by his club Juventus when they are discussing transfer fees) has already turned down a reported £250,000-a-week offer to join City.

So if Hughes wants to tighten up at the back, his last line of defence will either have to remain as Joe Hart or possibly the very unhappy Newcastle stopper Shay Given who is reported to be on the verge of ending his 11-year stay at St James' Park and who wants to win something (!) and who will cost around £10m.

The ease with which Rob Earnshaw and the rest of the Forest side sliced through City would suggest the biggest changes should be made at the back.

Bridge has already sealed up the left, but what about the centre?

Milan's world-cup winner Alessandro Nesta fits the bill there, retired from international football, he's got a contract with the Italians until 2011 but it's likely to be his last and could be tempted by one final huge payday taking him through to his 35th birthday.

And Hughes is unlikely to lure the other central defensive powerhouse, Nemanja Vidic, away from the red half of Manchester even if he doesn't have to move house for more cash.

To plug that right back slot, Hughes could pull off a masterstroke and offer Gary Neville both regular football and the captaincy, but a more likely target would be Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos, a defender who's never afraid to power forward and would be a snip at around £20m.

In left midfield, it could be time to snap up Arjen Robben from Real Madrid or possibly even wind up Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill with a ludicrous £25m bid for Ashley Young. Or even £75m for Cristiano Ronaldo from the Reds.

Next stop Boca Juniors and Argentina attacking central midfielder Juan Riquelme, still a tour de force at 30, and still expensive enough to merit opening up the cheque book. He's even got an Olympic gold medal.

To balance Riquelme's surging runs, Hughes should partner him with Barcelona's more defensive-minded Xavi, one of the victorious Spanish Euro 2008 side and with enough experience to soothe even the most headless of chickens.

On the right, it's doubtful Hughes will be able to lure Ricardo Quaresma or Rafael van der Vaart away from their new clubs, Lionel Messi is the only option but Barcelona won't release their 21-year-old wizard for much less than £100m.

That leaves the attack where Samuel Eto'o could be ripe to be plucked from Barca and Germany star Lucas Podolksi who could be cheap at £10m - because Bayern Munich don't want him any more.

ON YOUR WAY OUT PLEASE SHUT THE DOOR...Hughes will obviously have to make some attempts at balancing the books, so some players will be heading for relative anonymity of Wigan, Bolton, Blackburn or even the Championship.

Players like Michael Ball and Dietmar Hamann who reportedly refused to warm up when asked to come on at Hull a few weeks ago will be first on the moving staircase out of Eastlands.

Also on his way out is Jo, the non-scoring Brazilian who cost a club record £19m in July 2008. Two of this three goals this season were against Omonia Nicosia in the UEFA Cup.

Benjani wrote his name in City folklore with a goal on his debut in the 2-1 defeat of United 11 months ago but has since struggled with injury, restricting his appearances to just 20. He could fetch a million or so.

Stephen Ireland is in the form of his life at present and is arguably City's best player. Hughes might decide to make the most of a player he nearly let go pre-season to cut the wage bill and fund another transfer target.

But in reality, if Hughes can sign his main transfer targets, all City players will be fair game, so the likes of Elano, Vincent Kompany and Robinho cannot rest easy until 5:01pm on Monday, February 2, when the window officially slams shut and stability returns to football for a few more months.
