Would the main forums be faster...

if all the old threads (say anything over a year) were moved into a subforum/ archive forum? I remember reading that the server had to decide which posts you've read every time you load the screen up, surely this is eating up resources? There are 1.5m posts in the main forum now and that seems like a helluva lot of work for the software and the hardware. Would an archive help?
