Would you be in favour of random searches for knives?

Possibly including an automatic sentance of around 18 months.

Too many people carrying them about without any intention of actually stabbing someone and then ending up stabbing someone anyway. And it's too easy for someone to carry one for protection and then again, end up stabbing someone.

Myself, in a moment of madness last week, grabbed the closet thing to hand and went in search for a car full of lads who had just thrown something at my pregnant sister. I grabbed it for protection incase things got a bit out of hand what with being outnumbered. I'm glad i wasn't attacked as i could of ended up accidently stabbing someone and then that would of been me fucked.

Problem is: had i of been randomly searched and given 18 months i would have felt hard done by. Although, had i of been aware of this risk i might have been less inclined to grab the knife.

I think random checks and an automatic prison sentance would be a good detterant but i'm unsure of how many people would be harshly punished if such a thing was implemented.

Look, I'm not trying to pick apart a well intentioned question... but... If you had "a moment of madness" and picked up a knife(which you neglect to fully admit to til later) how would, in being being aware of the risk of an 18 month sentence, that change things to where you "might have been less inclined to grab the knife"??

Fair point. But i'd say i was angry enough to pick it up without thinking too much about the consequences until later - but not so blinded by anger that i'd forget about an automatic 18 month sentance. If that makes any sense?

Yes, though perhaps 18 months for repeat offenders or people with a conviction for some form of violent behaviour.

A huge fine, a kicking (optional), some form of regular checks and your last chance warning for first time offenders.

Guns should be 10 years minimum straight off.

Nail Clippers punishable by death.

Mmm... It still falls down, doesn't it? If you carried a knife in 'defence', it's still a pre-meditation of intent. How can it not be? It doesn't matter if it was for your sister's protection if you went OUT searching for the culprits. But, then, that goes for the many that carry it on the streets, in the same self protective vain. You cannot feel hard done by. Harsh, but, it should all carry the same sentence, regardless.

If knife possession happened in the home, where a sudden random act of wanton violence threatened your life, that's different, you would have a point.

That's just MY opinion, mind.
