The textile company which handles the dyeing & 'finishing' for the tartan is a Client of mine. I bumped into the MD a couple of months ago in our local town and he was telling me the story about this.

He knows that I'm a big City fan and he asked me (quote) "Does the name Bobby Johnstone mean anything to you ?". I then regaled him with stories of how Bobby was my boyhood hero, and that he should get his hands on the biography (Passing of an Age) etc etc. Poor guy couldn't get away.

Anyway, I think it's a lovely looking tartan and I'm buying the scarf - not suitable for the match IMO, but eminently suitable for casual winter wear.

Is the scarfon sale yet?

Yes I bought it on Sun.

and mini kilt? :-)

I'd generally have no problems wearing anything City related but I draw the line at tartan because I find the vast majority of Scottish people appear to despise the English and everything they stand for. It bothers me even more because it doesn't seem to be returned from us. I think Scotland is a beautiful Country and their people are incredibly passionate Football Fans - but they let themselves down with deeply unacceptable xenophobia.

Pubs in Scotland are full of people cheering on Argentina, Brazil or Germany against England.

Thank God there is a Scotland or there would have been no Andy Morrisons and Paul Dickovs who helped us through those dark dark days.

A few years ago, if any of the home Nations were playing I would want them to win unless they were playing England of course. So always England first. However the way Scottish people go out of their way to really cheer on another team to beat England was shocking. They do it with real spite and venom. For me I never support Scotland at anything now. I think a lot of English people feel this way. It was the realisation, 'Wow they really don't like us, it's not just friendly, local rivalry'. It's also the way they think they can say things against English and it's OK, we should just be fine with it. An example is when Andy Murray said, 'I always support anyone but England'. He thought he could say that and no-one would be bothered.

Yes there have been lots of negative things done by English people to Scotland in the History of our Countries and a lot of the hate comes from the days of Thatcher but they go over the top. They never acknowledge the good things about England. Who bailed out their banks? Without ENGLISH money Scotland would be worse than Greece. Where do they get the money to pay for free university, free elderly care etc? Something like 7 of the 10 highest benefit dependent areas are in Scotland and Wales, where and who do they think is providing this money? Scotland get more money back from the Treasury, in a block grant, than they raise in income.

Anyway in sporting terms when we compete as separate nations Scotland are as foreign as France, Germany, Spain etc. We are all European.

My post might seem anti-Scottish, but I'm not. My dad's 2nd wife is Scottish and they live with their 3 children in Stirling!! So there you have the complexities of the English-Scottish relationship!!

I like England, generally a better place to live imo and the people are great. But I'll still support Germany and Argentina over England. Don't look at it as Xenophobia, more the fact that we've never got a hope, so we don't like you looking good.(Envy if you must put a name to it)

And on another note, you're all happy to call Andy Murray; British when he's winning and Scottish when he slumps in the semis.

.

Not really, that's the usual media hype. Every other English person I know considers Murray Scottish and don't support him, win lose or draw. After what he said, that's why his PR people are always trying to emphasize he's British. Wrapping himself in the Union flag etc.

Do you think Scottish soldiers etc who died fighting Germans, alongside their English colleagues under the Union flag would have ever thought their Scottish compatriots would one day support Germany over England? This shows how bitter Scottish people are!
