WSL 25/26 Discussion - The Other Teams

United whacked again this evening. This time 5-2 in the champions league. Knew their paper thin squad would start to struggle eventually with UWCL football but didnt expect it to happen as early as November.
Think they’re already through though, or virtually through (aren’t they?)

Don't know how many games they play (only 18 teams), need to see how many they all have after tomorrow night, but they're not that far ahead of other teams, another defeat wouldn't do them any good, and their GD is now shite, they'd only conceded once in the first three games, but have a GD of zero from four games.

They are well placed to get a play-off spot (top 12). They were always unlikely to finish top 4 to go straight to the QF round. Their draw was skewed - they had the 3 bottom ranked teams first and then the 3 harder teams (Wolf, Juve & Lyon) to come.

(Whisper it, but it would be in our interests for them to make the QFs as the 2 legs are either side of the return derby.)

Love a bit of forward planning !!!

Oh no! Arf

The excuse will be of course that they were tired from playing us and getting whacked by us the Saturday before; and the excuse for that defeat will be the midweek game they had before that and so on......such a shame.

A tough job for the BBC Sport team to polish the turd of their last 2 hammerings; Im sure theyll be a 10 min read coming soon on why Jess Park was the best player on view in both games.

I mean, they were pretty tired before they even played us. A few players hadnt even been able to complete their training session before their game with us. But...that's on the club hierarchy. If they arent interested in assembling a squad capable of competing on several fronts then theres no point getting excited about getting into Europe, a competition that they wont win and their involvement in will torpedo their domestic season.

It would be lovely to win the title in front of him in our last home game of the season. I suspect he'll have been sacked by then though
TBH, I don't really care that much, he had a good team here, he just couldn't make it good enough, but he's got a lousy team there, and there was no way he was going to polish that.

I just want us to win it, after going so close a couple of times.

Why? Sports "personality" is certainly different than "player of the year" or similar. Frankly, if she's to be nominated for anything, this may be the proper award.
Maybe her personality is a problem ? She certainly doesn't stand out any more as a footballer, and she was very good at one point, but that faded badly 2+ years ago.

She couldn't cope with the fact that she was playing shite and couldn't get in our team for nearly 18 months (she had plenty of opportunity), so decided to kick up a fuss. At the time it seemed she wanted united, but City refused her that, and she eventually signed for arsenal on loan, and then she started bad mouthing City. She joined a team that won the WCL fortunately for her, then scored a penalty as england won the Euro's.

She may well have fallen out with taylor, but that is no excuse, he wasn't picking her because she didn't deserve to be selected on her form.

Since then she's spent most of this season sat on the arsenal bench (as she was doing at City) because she's not good enough to start. She'll soon be wanting to leave them, and be bad mouthing arsenal I expect.

If that makes her a potential "sports personality of the year", the world is fucked.

She gets the sport websites "clicks" and views. That is what matters to them.

She's not out, as far as we know, robbing, murdering, having drunken episodes, or "Do you know who I am?" moments. In my opinion, being nominated for this award isn't completely unreasonable.

I feel that if any of the England Women's team then it should have been Lucy Bronze. Playing in the Euro's with a fractured tibia deserves it more than any of the others as far as I'm concerned. I suppose Kelly gets mentioned over someone like Mead or Russo (also Champions League and Euro's winners) is that she is more of a self-publicist than the others so is more recognisable to people who don't follow women's football.

Chloe Kelly nominated for bbc sports personality of the year, has to be the joke of the year.
Exactly ....There's a certain irony in today's Guardian football coverage this week . Mo Salah is castigated for throwing his toys out of the pram . Chloe Kelly applauded for doing the same last season .

Don't get me wrong , the situations weren't exactly identical, and Gareth Taylor people management skills were more than lacking , but essentially we have two superstar players, full of self belief and and expecting to play regardless , who were dropped because of poor form and went public . Neither of them seemed to be able to accept this and it has to be someone else's fault .

Meanwhile the fella in the cult club is a traitor while Kelly is up for SPOTY , having rebooted at Arsenal and England . Fair enough , and I'm the first to delight in her Euro's performance, but she leaves a sour taste for me in the way she left our club .

City women are now top of the league and the player who was consistently picked instead of Kelly, Fujino , is a human dynamo , presses like a machine and meant Kelly had to fight for her place when we signed her in summer 2024 .

Well never know what went on in Taylor dressing room but, as a WSL season ticket holder, I say Fujino is the right choice for that position. And we now, under a new manager , play a looser more vertical game that Kelly would have enjoyed. Heck, maybe her strop did us a favour by helping her rid of Taylor ..

Sliding doors moments ....

She's the poster girl and that's why she's been nominated. Wasn't in the top 3 Lionesses from the Euros, but she's been nominated because her face fits.

She couldn't get in City's first team, can't get in Arsenal's and can't get a competitive start for England. Says it all.

Such a shame for players like Bronze, Greenwood, Mead, Stanway that were head and shoulders above her at the Euros.
