WSL Chelsea (H) 08/10/23:

Apparently she has ambitions to ref at a high level in the men's game. Unless Sunday was a one off aberration I'd suggest it's not really the gig for her at any level.

She'll get there, I'm sure there's a will for it to happen from above. She'll ref some men's games and the top brass will all be patting themselves on the backs about how inclusive and forward-thinking they are.

It reminds me of some dodgy street gang, where a possible new member has to prove themselves by nicking a car or stabbing a rival, or something like that. You pass the test, you get helped up. It happened to Attwell after the ghost goal and it'll happen now to her.

Yeah, I would think that most folk don't know about the ghost goal, or have forgotten it. I still run it in my mind's eye whenever he turns up for a footy match. I expect some aspect of pantomime with every game!

How can she progress further?

Thought you were responding regarding the ghost goal. Attwell certainly did progress further.

For Heaslip, refereeing men's Premier League matches would be a huge step up should it happen. That's not to demean the women's game, but the speed of the game and the amount of money and viewers involved would be another level.

I meant every referee. All of them have made mistakes.

People forget good refereeing performances and remember every time they think they’ve wronged the team you support. It’s the nature of the beast.

Heaslip won’t have been marked down for her performance last weekend as she didn’t make any errors when applying the LOTG.

I guess the rest depends on how they judge a referee’s control of the game. That was what we’re questioning here, not mistakes.

A referee making a mistake doesn’t mean they can’t progress either. We’d have none left.

Oh I agree with that, mostly. Mistakes happen, but I don't see how the ghost goal gets given by any ref unless something sinister is going on. Maybe there's a conspiracy nut deep down in me, but I felt he had been told to do something ridiculous and by then doing it, he showed he was willing to ref games however was needed.

No ref should progress after a mistake like that one.

Heaslip's performance struck the same chord with me. Told to be super strict on time wasting and dissent, so she does exactly what she was told. Yeah the match was fucked as a result, but she'll have earned top marks and her day in the sun will come.
