According to sub-editor of Spanish newspaper Marca, Francisco Justicia, changes need to be made.

"On the one hand it (Spanish football) has been greatly affected by the economic crisis, but there are also other problems in the form of terrible scheduling and excessive prices," Justicia said.

"In terms of the prices, the average ticket in Spain costs between 25 and 30 pounds more than the average ticket for an (English) Premier League match. Then you have the terrible scheduling. Games aren't grouped together here like they are in the Premier League.

The real problem in Spain is the number of televised games and how TV money is unfairly shared out. Barcelona and Madrid receive ridiculous amounts - over 140 million euros each - whereas the smaller, unfashionable clubs (teams like Real Sociedad, Rayo Vallecano, Levante or Getafe) will only receive about 12 million euros.

When smaller clubs play one of the 'big two', they therefore charge astronomical prices in order to try and take advantage of all the plastic Barca or Madrid fans who turn up. Even season-ticket holders have to pay extra for these games (known as 'días del club').

Normal prices are probably not that expensive. For the first games of 2013, for example, Getafe - Granada tickets are available for between 30 and 60 euros. Rayo Vallecano - Getafe tickets are even cheaper: from 18 to 45 euros. Atlético de Madrid - Zaragoza: from 25 to 80 euros.

Practically half of Spain supports Madrid, the other half supports Barca. There is generally no such thing as 'support your local team', although some clubs (like Atlético de Madrid, Betis, Sevilla, Valencia or Athletic Bilbao) do have a pretty loyal following.
