Haha yeah the Phils won the series last year, been around since 1888 and have only won the damn thing twice. They're the losingest team in all of professional sports - in america atleast - with over 10,000 losses. They've been terrible forever up until now.

Eagles are 1-1, but they should be pretty good this year.

I've always thought you can kind of relate Philly sports to city. Diehard fans, perennial underachievers, constant heartbreak, never ever win anything. The world series last year was the first thing the city has won since '83, so with all 4 major sports, one championship in 100 seasons.

i've experienced it first hand. My brother lived in philly for four or five years. Everyone is sports crazy, especially for the eagles.

wasn't there riots after the phils won the series?

Is south street the street with all the bars? I love that street

South Street is A street with a bunch of bars... :)

Main Street has a bunch too...same with the Olde City section.

The real story....

One baseball myth that just won't die is that the "World Series" was named for the New York World newspaper, which supposedly sponsored the earliest contests. It didn't, and it wasn't.

In fact, the postseason series between the AL and NL champs was originally known as the "Championship of the World" or "World's Championship Series." That was shortened through usage to "World's Series" and finally to "World Series."

This usage can be traced through the annual baseball guides. Spalding's Base Ball Guide for 1887 reported the results of the 1886 postseason series between Chicago, champions of the National League, and St. Louis, champions of the American Association, under the heading "The World's Championship." As the editor noted, the two leagues "both entitle their championship contests each season as those for the base ball championship of the United States," so a more grandiose name was required to describe the postseason showdown between the two "champions of the United States."

The Red Sox are City despite their 'colorful' name. Had no success for decades and then came into good owners...failed miserably at beating their rivals one year and then decimated them the next....or so I pray.

Come on City!

Well, since the best players from every country play in the MLB, I don't see how it's so wrong to call it the World Series.

Go Phils.

ahh now I get it, we should change The "English Premier League" to the "World Premier League" for the same reason then.
Thanks for clearing things up ;)

Do you mean the Champions League with non-Champions? Or the Europa League for the European Club Cup, right? or the Championship? Or is it the Premier League or First Division or League One? Please clear that up for me. Cheers.

The Red Sox have won more World Series this decade than any other team has which doesn't really fit. However, there is a good comparison between where City is at now and where Boston was at around 03/04 when they began to catch up to their rivals and eventually overtake them. Hopefully City is in the middle of doing that right now and on their way to a lovely decade of winning and contending.

That was really my point about the Red Sox, an historical similarity which a few good VERY recent seasons can't change (like you say, the Red Sox just have a head start over City), plus a fierce rivalry with the worst bunch of rotters in the entire baseball world.

Oh how Red Sox fans were mocked and ridiculed...no one is laughing now :-)!

I started following City a while back because they remind me of my favorite American football team Texas Tech (I prefer to follow the college game as opposed to the professional game).

- Both teams have a very rabid local fanbase (Texas Tech is located in west Texas and is pretty isolated).
- One of our major rivals is Texas (as close to rag as you can get).
- A bit after the fact, but both teams are now getting more recognition for performing well.

I know that when I do make it out to a City match one of these days that I may get a few weird looks, but I'm not too worried about it.
