Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge

Depending on the weather it can be a sheer delight or a miserable trudge.

Never underestimate the weather in Ribblesdale, I've seen snow in June.
Years ago I worked at an outdoor pursuit centre in between Kendal and Ingleton.
Went caving in the shadow of the viaduct. Parked up, nice crisp and clear February morning. Spent an hour or so underground following the Ribble. Came out to completely thick fog. Could hardly see the end of your nose. And there was sleet too.
Fortunately (and unbeknown to the rest of us) the leader had taken a compass bearing of where the minibus was...... and off we all marched, single file, arm on the shoulder of the person in front of you and made our way back safely. 10 mins later a nice crisp clear day.
Beautiful part of the country.

I’ve just finished the fucker. Got round in 9 hours 57 minutes. Weather was perfect. Never again though. I got blisters after about 2 miles and my feet are now completely fucked. It’s a psychological battle but glad I made it. In my teens and twenties I think I’d of pissed it but at 44 it was hard. Hats off to all of you who did it
Well done!
And “never again” ? How many times have we all said that? Good luck with your next long distance challenge!

Walk? I thought it was a run?
There are some crazy fuckers who run it. The record is about 2 hours 40 minutes which is unbelievable. You have to scramble up some parts and two of the three peaks are fucking steep. Imagine having trekked 20 miles then having to climb your third peak of the day. You are advised to train for 3 months before completing it. Obviously the only physical training I did was walking home from the pub

I did this mid July to raise money for the BHF, when it was absolutely sweltering (25-30 degrees). I am fairly fit, and run frequently, also walk a fair amount, but really struggled especially with the last peak (ingleborough). I took plenty of water and had a decent supply of food, but the heat really sapped my energy.

The worst part of the day was the final section from ingleborough back to the car park in Horton. What I thought was going to be a relaxing walk back downhill was absolute torture, around another 7-8k on horrible uneven paths with the sun on my back was just a killer!

Good sturdy boots
Corned beef butties
A flask of piping hot bovril
A serviceable hat
Clean underwear in case you have to be rescued

Good luck with the walk mate, and most of all enjoy it.
Clean underwear? Big softy I completed the whole of the Pennine Way with 3 pair of underpants and 2 pair of walking socks. You can easily get 3 days out of a pair of underpants and then you turn them inside out for another 3 days. After 18 days if you haven't finished the first pair don't smell too bad so you start again. Wear a pair of walking socks until they go hard then change them.

Yes, I was so happy to have scaled Ingleborough (very steep) that I thought the walk back to Horton would be a piece of piss. As you say, the uneven path was torture on my blistered feet and it seemed to go on for ages. I was so happy to get back to the hotel!
