You could see Mourinho's eyes light up

When he saw Mancini going to the 3-5-2 in the second half.

We'd weathered the storm and actually taken control of the game. We were ahead, Silva and Yaya had been causing them problems, they were being restricted to long shots. I was sitting at home, thinking of division 2, scarcely able to believe we were looking like winning at the Bernabau. As soon as I saw that change, I thought the same as Mourinho: we've opened up the flanks for them.

He made his changes, and lo and behold, their wide men found the space and got the goals.

I really really hope this is the last we see of this bloody 3-5-2. We have not got the players for it at the back. Clichy's not at his best tucked in. Lescott and Kompany look uneasy in it. Milner, Zabaleta, Maicon, Kolorov are not wing backs. They are not mobile enough.

It was a tactical change which cost us the game last night. On the plus side, I'm really hoping we don't see it again.

On another plus side, I was delighted the manager finally put Ya Ya in the role he is effective in from the start. I hope I never hear another poster on here say "he's only effective in that role late in games" because it's bollocks as he proved again last night.

So whilst I'm gutted we lost the game, I see two major positives to come from this. The death of the 3-5-2 and the death of Yaya as a holding player.

Pretty sure Mancini will use 352 many more times in the season.

He tried it sometimes last year he practiced it in all pre season matches and tried it against Liverpool and yesterday too.

We dont play it well right now that is true. Dont think we wont see it again. Some kind of plan B, which is very much important for Mancini to have a plan be.

But if we defend so bad it doesnt matter what is the system. Bad mistakes are bad mistakes in every system. And Madrid is gonna use that mistakes. In first half Hart had 3 huge saves to prevent them from scoring. The last two times he couldnt save that was the main difference. System this system that.

Ronaldo had about the same shot in the end like in first half. Maicon/Kompany was nowhere that time too.

He should learn his lesson from Liverpool and last night. On both occasions it played into the opponents hands. Just fucking drop it. And of course the system matters: as soon as we changed it Madrid scored goals from space which the system creates.

Oh and don't get me going on Maicon. Another Sylvenio. His legs have gone. Zabaleta, for all his faults, should have started.

I thought he changed to 3 at the back straight after the break personally. In fact i was completely adamant he had but it wasn't picked up by the commentators nor have I seen it mentioned here. I was sure he'd moved Maicon out to wing back and Kolarov the same on the other side. Clichy went inside as part of the back 3 and Silva went up to play behind Tevez with Yaya advancing from midfield.

I thought it was strange nobody picked up on it but if you look back on the second half from the start and our shape when defending it looks like he changed it half time

It won't be the last time it costs us either. If he continues this stupid tactic question marks will remain about Mancini's tactics and record in Europe.

I remember reading an article recently linked from zonalmarking.net that made clear a 3 man defence needs a fair amount of time to perfect. Not something easily imposed on a team used to playing 4 at the back. I think we're seeing evidence in all games this year that Mancini's experiments with it are causing problems. It could be part of why Kompany has looked out of form in all games.

Good summary of the tactical battle here

He did and we went into a strange hybrid of a back 4 / back 3 as soon as Nasri went out. I think Michael Cox has the right of it and Kompany let several other players down with his positioning not to mention that ludicrous last goal.

When Zaba came on you can see him give the instruction for 5

Nasri shouldnt of started,Kolarov onthe left side of midfield,Dzeko should of swapped with Tevez after 70 mins with Lescott on for Silva.we still would of created chances and been more solid at the back.Lots of mistakes made last night.both by Mancini and the players.never mind another big game at weekend
