Your favourite national anthem

Liked Slovakia's tonight, no words, orchestral, lovely.

The US one does my tits in. A succession of female singers at sporting events have to give it their own slant..."star spangled baaaaaannnnneeeeeaaaaaaaaeeeeeeeeaaaaaaeeeeerrrrrrr..." Twats.
 
Quite like the tune of the Liechtenstein one ! Sure I've heard it somewhere else though !
 
Agree about O Canada. All Americans know Canada's anthem kicks the snot out of The Star Spangled Banner. Every time an American hockey team plays a Canadian one, they play both before the game, and more Americans sing "true patriot's love" than "the rockets' red glare", mostly because it's easier to hit the notes.

Did they play the Canadian National Anthem at the Stanley Cup Playoffs this year? None of their teams were in it..... Well gotta think of the players.

I always think anthems fall into particular categories that can be differentiated by the pose adopted by the participants.

Firstly, you have the stand alone, arms behind your back, dirge of an anthem where the player has heard it all before, rarely sings, and is just going through the motions type. Think England football.

Secondly, you have the arms across the shoulders, all in this together, everyone pulling together and singing lustily and prepared to tear the badge of the shirt off type. Think Italy rugby.

Thirdly, you have the hand on heart, I know all the words and just love my country and all that it stands for type. Think team USA all sports.

Fourthly, and my personal favourite, is the hand across the chest palm downwards type, much beloved by the Latin American countries. Anthem will be jaunty, passionate, and almost definitely break off into an unrestrained trumpet fanfare that leads to the goalkeeper weeping uncontrollably.

Putin brought the anthem back after a period in the 90's when it was ditched.

The wording is different from that of the Soviet era.
