Not a film but a series, Generation Kill.

I thought it was well filmed. Rather than focusing on CGI'd fire fights, huge explosions and glorifying war it focused more on the realities such as Regimental politics, running out of gun oil, squabbles and funny characters.

I know they're not films but Band of Brothers and The Pacific are so good no film can get close and are a disappointment compared.

If you're going to mention tv shows you need to give an honorable mention to Anzacs. It could of dated really badly as I've not seen it since the 80's. Back in the 80's though it was bloody brilliant.

I used to love "tour of duty" when I was at college, american vietnam war series, used to go out for a few beers, bring a pizza back (or marmite and cheese on toast if it was near the end of term) to watch T.O.D - then back out, bus into liverpool to some crap club or other trawling for gals...

eee, lad - them were't days...

A few of my favourite French War Films:

Au revoir les enfants-an autobiographical film by Louis Malle, set in a Catholic boarding school during WW2 where some Jewish boys are hidden by the priests. The final scene gets me every single time!

Le Dernier Métro-a fantastic Truffault film set in Paris during the occupation with Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu. Deneuve is an actress married to a Jewish theatre owner who has to flee the Nazis. Depardieu and Deneuve at their finest.

Lacombe Lucien- another Louis Malle film all about a boy who fails to get into the resistance so ends up being a collaborator.

Les Femmes de l'ombre-a group of French women join the British Special Ops to try to free a geologist.

Lucie Aubrac-another true story from occupied France all about the resistance/gestapo in Lyon.

Won't be everybody's cup of tea, but they are defo worth a watch
