Your top 5 TV Drama series of all time?

I’m surprised with the amount of people rating Auf Wiedersehen Pet, don’t like it at all myself!
Fully agree that True Detective S1 was great and fully worth a spot, I found S2 far too slow and dull and gave up.
Cracker and Dexter are also both worth a mention in the nearly there section.

PS 1 vote for Babylon 5 WTF!

1. The Wire
2. Breaking Bad
3. Boardwalk Empire
4. Mad Men
5. Game of Thrones

A few more good seasons of Orange is the new black and that could be up there

Also surprised no mentions of Sons of Anarchy

TV boxsets are in many ways the new way of consuming that media. People will binge watch series like never before. I read a great little book called 'The Revolution will be Televised' and it spoke about how TV shows changed from the 90's onwards and the bar was raised exponentially with shows like The Sopranos and Oz. Far more craft and money was spent on the finished product and major actors from 'The Big Screen' were happy to ply their trade on TV shows.

Top 5 for me is going to hard as the choice is immense. How can you compare a classic 70's comedy like Fawlty Towers with Fargo or True Detective? They are playing a different sport almost it's like comparing Brazils 1962 WC winning team with the German one who won the last WC. I'll give it a go but it's not easy.

The Wire (The seasons varied in quality but all took on major themes of the day. The underfunding of the education system in inner-city America or the shrinking place of the printed press in modern day society and their duty to print truth. This was all against a backdrop of violence & drugs and very personal characters and the issues that they dealt with)

Sopranos (A true game changer this show literally showed the world what could be accomplished with TV. The major story arcs, the quality of acting, the quality of the script, the high levels of production!! It literally blew the bloody doors off)

Twin Peaks (I watched this again recently and loved it. The 1st season and the start of the 2nd season and indeed the end of the second season was ground-breaking. It took the viewer places that was never expected for an audience to go and this ultimately led to it's demise as the a large audience was never gonna go all the way and figures dwindled. Also Lynch took his eyes of the prize mid season 2 to work on a film and no Lynch, No Twin Peaks)

After them there's loads of quality but they interchange depending on what mood I'm in. Fargo, True Detective, Father Ted, Utopia, Oliver Stones History of America, Rake, Jack Irish, Underbelly, Band of Brothers, Game of Thrones, Peaky Blinders, Mr Robot, Quarry (my fave of the last few months). Have loved this thread and will be chacking out so that I have missed. Cheers Good people

Because Fawlty Towers wasn't a drama series

However, agree with your first point - Box-sets have taken over films for me, i feel underwhelmed watching a movie nowadays.

Good call on TTSS and Carnivale, which ended far too early.
already submitted my list, but would like Six Feet Under to get a mention...
