Attack by Napoli fans.

I did. Naples isn’t the kind of place to be waving flags around thinking nothing will happen. Sad, but true . At some point we might play Besiktas ......same scenario. Eccles and other flags in one of their ends upside down is embarrassing .

Generally speaking and at no one in particular, Just putting a few urban myths to bed, there wasn’t 1200 there , nowhere near, you only had to look at the number of buses in the escort afterwards . More went 6 years ago .

As for Naples itself , it what it is . If you get squeamish about graffitied walls ; dustbin bins overflowing , young lads on scooters driving like idiots and open air drug selling .......where are you from ?

Each to his own , the place can be a bit rough and ready to a few of these people getting a bit precious on this forum ( “ arrrest the flag stealers ! “...... you couldn’t make it up . ) Ive had a few days there; enjoyed every minute . Good food, good drink , decent people, buzzing city and that’s before we get to the game itself. Roll on Sunday .

I was at the game mate and the view was we had 1,200 at the match and it was a bigger following than 2011. Plenty of Blues made their own way to the ground but I was happy to be on the escorted buses.

I enjoyed the trip and I thought the police did a good job. Having flags upside down in the home end is more embarrassing for the Napoli thugs, especially when we know they have been stolen at knife point.

The majority of the Napoli fans will be good people and several Blues swapped scarfs with napoli fans after the home game. We were looked after by the people running the bars in the Port Area and the Spike’s Tours guys.

If you don’t like people taking flags then that’s your view but it doesn’t mean other Blues shouldn’t. When I go to the Derby at the swamp, some years I wear colours, sometimes I don’t. It’s a personal choice.

I’ve been brought up in Stretford and I wasn’t intimidated by Naples. That said, Naples does have a fierce reputation that goes far wider than football.

Absolutely. You go away, you keep your head down, drink quietly, do your own thing, away from the crowds, don’t attract untoward attention and save yourself any mither. Basic rules of “engagement”and ones that have stood me in good stead on hundreds of City trips, abroad and in England.
This. We had not a hint of mither.

Although I took the wife on this trip so there is a deterrent for any ultra out there right there.

At best 2 planes and 4 local buses out of the ground was never 1200... but it doesn’t matter if you were there....it was one of those nights when you’re proud to be there . “ This is what it’s like to be City.”....all through the second half.....like Feyenoord their lot kept it going but in the end it was like shooting fish. Who’s next ?
Two planes with about 200 on each is 400 and four local buses with loads rammed in each - they weren’t 55 seater coaches with everyone sat down. There were at least double that on each bus probably more plus people who made their own way from the stadium. Could easily be 1200 in total.

I'm sure the official figure for 2011 was larger, and whereas we might have sold 1200 tickets for this fixture, I'm not convinced that everyone travelled to the game. It certainly didn't look that many when I looked back from the front of the block.
On the other hand, does it really matter?
I've done both games, but unless it's a future knockout fixture, I won't be returning. I'm sure most Napoli fans are decent, but the farcical, time-consuming post match lock-in suggests otherwise

I loved the place, would like to go back as a tourist and have a proper look round.
So much History there around every corner.
Has been declared a World Heritage site.
Sure it's decaying but thats part of the charm.
Much prefer it to some of the sterile City's in Europe.
Stayed in Sorrento the first time we played and went to Pompeii, amazing place.

Sorrento, Capri and the Amalfi coast all stunningly beautiful.

Vesuvius and the walk to the crater a wonderful experience.

Pompeii and Herculaneum so interesting and living history.

The Italian public on the whole very welcoming and extremely friendly.

Naples an absolute dump.

The group I was with were attacked walking to the buses by the port, I was chased by a prick with a knife who was wearing all black clothes, had a hood over his head and a scarf around his face, he wouldn't do anything in the open though, as soon as I ran to where some people were milling about the guy retreated back into the trees then disappeared, it was starting to get dark now as well.

The following is my recollection of what happened...

It all started when the very decent lads from Mary D's put their banner up outside a pub hight up overlooking the port and near a huge big square, there were maybe 50-60 city in there drinking and having a good time, not a hint of trouble so far. Then out of nowhere a guy walked up (who we know know to be a spotter) told us to take the banner down, he was basically told to bolt. Now this guy looked nothing like your typical stereotype hooligan, he was dressed very smartly had a short beard and glasses on, anyway he buggered off after a few minutes and nothing more was thought of it.

After having a good few bevies in there we headed down the hill to a another pub which was pretty much on the shore, we were having a beer there when we seen we were being watched by a group of lads across the road, however a police van rolled up outside and they quickly moved away. It was when we left the pub by the shore the "fun" started. Our group consisted of around 8 of us including one kid, we were walking away from the pub when we were confronted by about 4 idiots taunting us, including the original knobber who had said take the banner down in the first pub, one of them grabbed my scarf but I was too quick for him and yanked it back. They were told we didn't want any trouble and we are only here for a drink and the match, nothing else. A couple of them shot off on scooters and we thought that would be the end of it - no, the scooter boys turned out to be messengers it seems.

Shortly after that little confrontation down a winding street that takes you to the port where the buses are parked with a wall on one side and a wooded park area on our righthand side. It was then we could see a few dodgy looking folk hanging about in the park sitting/standing by a bench, its twilight now and we couldn't tell if they were looking at us or minding their own business. With out warning though they all ran at us at once, now I was about 10 feet in front of the rest of the group and one of the guys made a bolt in my direction so of course I took to my heels as well. Once I'd put a bit of distance between me and him (I'm no slouch) I turned round to face him and shouted at him f**k off but he was still chasing after me but he had a knife in his right had so I rand into the road and as soon as I did he disappeared back into the shadows. In the mean time all i could hear from the rest of the group was shouts of wow wow wow wow but I couldn't see what was happening through parked cars and poor lighting, It was only later when I met up with them in the ground I was told they had their banner stolen at knife point and right enough you could see them holding it upside down in the middle of Curva A about halfway up the stand.

I was then accosted by and very large group of Polizia outside the port entrance who were asking what had happened, myself and another blue tried to explain that there was about 10-12 hooligans with knives in the park area attacking innocent city fans, most of them ran off in that directions with batons drawn ready to tackle them, I've no idea if they caught them or not. A copper then took my passport and match ticket and took a picture of them before handing them back and saying go to your bus now, I went for one more pint before getting on my bus and heading to the game.

Being kept in for 90 minutes after the match was a joke but I can see why they done it, the surrounding area outside the ground was like a rabbit warren of streets and alley ways and it would have been very easy for city fans to have been ambushed, every street in the surrounding area was cleared of people with police cars at every junction to stop people getting anywhere near our buses.

The above is what happened to the best of my memory bearing in mind I'd had a good bevy during the day.

Naples - dump of a place, dump of a stadium and as for their fans, they are nothing but a bunch knife wielding shitebags who pick on innocent people and they do not discriminate. men, women and children all appear to be fair game. I won't be back, ever!

I am glad you got back relatively unhurt. I think the spotter you talked about was the same guy who came upto us. I am 53 and went with my 16 year old son and was with two other blues circa 24 and 40. When we got off spikes coaches we saw a few small groups giving us the once over. We headed to the sea front and found a nice restaurant and crashed lots of booze and food. We even had a chat with Ian Cheesman and ended up on his vlog. On the way back to get the coaches at the port the spotter came upto me and asked me for a fight - like a kid at school. When I made it clear we were in Naples for the game he backed off. I suspected he was going to round his mates up. Thankfully a decent group of blues were all walking together in the wooded park area you refer to. It felt like safety in numbers, because they are cowards picking off small groups with weapons. When we goto the bars close to the buses they had just closed the bars on police instruction. I hope some of the small minded Napoli fans read this threat to realise how much british people dispise their childish behaviour. If they want a fight they should pick on groups of equal size and no weapons. I suspect they would not want to fight in that scenario, because they are shithouses. Next time we play them I hope we take up the full 3000 allocation and everyone stays in a massive group. The club and UK police should work with the Italians to create a proper fanzone. I dont understand the Napoli fans mentality. If every team decided it was too risky to visit the atmosphere would be shite.
