Colne Dynamos in the late 80's were taken over by a wealthy benefactor and the club rose through the NWCL and Northern Premier League. However, their ground was still a NWCL ground and in order to get into the Vauxhall Conference they needed to up grade it big style.
They were turned down by both Blackburn and Burnley in ground sharing until their ground in Colne was brought up to Conference / League standard. Burnley in particular were very hostile to Colne Dynamos - Burnley were in the 4th Division at the time and saw the Dynamos as a real threat.
The owner of Colne was so pissed off with the attitude from Blackburn and Burnley (in particular) that he took his ball and went home and pulled out of the club - which plunged back down through the pyramid leagues as fast as they had risen.
Went bankrupt in 2011 and their phoenix club has started climbing back through the leagues (currently sitting in the 8th tier having started in the 10th tier 5 seasons ago).
Gretna FC. Came to prominence when insurance entrepreneur Brooks Mileson invested heavily in them. Played in the Scottish Cup Final in 2006 but ill health meant that Mileson was forced to withdraw his support and they folded 2 years later.
Still around, and playing in Spain's top flight, but Deportivo La Coruna used to be Champions League regulars, and reached the semi's in the year Porto won it. Since they've been relegated, got back up, but no longer seriously challenge for a top 4 place.
