Bus Parking...

I don’t mind a team who sit back and counter attack at pace.

Heynckes’ Bayern were a joy to watch winning a treble with those tactics. And other teams, down the bottom of the Prem have deployed some decent defensive displays with an ambition to take part in the game n’all.

What I hate is teams who have no ambition to take part in the game, sit back, never attack, hoof the ball forward or out of play at every opportunity and WASTE TIME to disgraceful levels.

They don’t deserve to be in our league playing like that. Referees should be booking time wasting in the tenth minute, teams should even be fined or be given retrospective bans for continual time wasting where weak refs have not punished them in game.

Bournemouth, Burnley, Huddersfield and Southampton have been a disgrace. Swapping who takes throw-ins and free kicks, moving the ball around pretending they don’t know where it should be taken from, pulling their socks down before retrieving the ball and then when they appear ready to take the throw-in or free kick they stop and pull their socks up.

FUCK OFF!

Get them booked early doors! Or fuck them off for the likes of Wolves who, even with eight changes to their starting XI, played with more purpose and ambition than four Premier League clubs have done.

Each of those four got exactly what they deserved against us; FUCK ALL!

Totally agree! It was poetic the goal being in the 96th minute. Expect more of the same. We missed Sane tonight but having said that Aguero really should be scoring from 6 yards with a free header and Jesus when 1 on 1.The strikers have gone off the boil a bit recently

Which is exactly why they shouldn't play together.

Totally agree with you on this. It was set up from the start. That knob of a ref should have gripped their captain, told him, if he sees any hint of delaying play or time wasting, captain goods in the book, then any subsequent player. That would pout a stop to the whole thing. I had to laugh at Pep screaming at Redmond as to why he wasn't taking our pretend left back apart, and Redmond under his breath, "cos our manager won't let me"!

Both Huddersfield and Southampton had similar tactics. Gave us the whole field to do whatever with and set up 5 across the 18 yard box and 4 a little further out. This takes parking the bus to a whole new level. To break this down seemed the weakest part is having wingers go to the byline. Sane would have really helped tonight, but rest is important as well.

We will come up against this most games now, everyone is well aware we aren’t much of a threat when we go wide as crosses are easy to deal with due to our lack of height.

We seem to have been up against this before but an early goal makes all the difference.

No one should really go toe to toe with us, so we have to accept it. We have also shown ourselves to be struggling at set plays which plays to this tactic.

Pep wil find away to create space and we’ll be fine!!

Can't agree with most of the posts on here. It is frustrating to watch...but I can remember getting nil nils away at Chelsea and United under Keegan where we barely left our half. Didn't we cheer them as great away performances? I was also at Stamford Bridge when we got pumped 6-0 under Seen when he went out to give them a game.

Taking your team away to the best attacking team in the country and attempting to go toe to toe with them is the epitome of foolishness. The opponents job isn't to roll over for us, it is to fight for points for their club and fans. Southampton nearly did that - fair play.

Width is key in Peps system because as we saw last season we were too narrow and didn't get the ball out wide enough and behind teams quick enough, with the introduction of Walker and Mendy/Delph along with Sane and Sterling getting chalk on their boots it's creating a lot more space inside for Silva, KDB etc to exploit. What I've noticed in the last two games and we've struggled with is switching play quick enough to create the 1v1 for Sterling or Sane and getting the ball out quick enough, we're taking 3-4 touches to switch flanks whereas earlier in the season we were hitting diagonals a lot sooner and spreading the play quicker.

Just an observation and a reason why we may be struggling of late to get behind teams and the parked bus

The easiest way would be just to do what we are doing, but do it better than we did v Huddersfield, imo. But we missed chances, fairly easy ones.

When we played v Pep's Bayern team (a game many of us considered to be the best thing we have ever seen in the flesh & ironically we are now often better) we were in effect parking the bus unintentionally, because we didn't have the tactics or organisation to do it intentionally, nor any counter attacking plan to break free, so just had everyone back defending. We initially managed to limit Bayern to few genuine opportunities in spite of their total dominance & recycling of the ball though.

Then Robben smacked a shot in, Joe fumbled it & we then had to come out (but couldn't).

But it was just a speculative shot, not part of the planned possession game. It worked though.

We could actually work on setting that up imo, like setting up a drop goal in rugby. Move the oppo around, try to thread it through, behind, like we usually do, but also move them around again, looking to make an opening to lay a ball in front of someone for a first time shot.

In a way, although it wasn't strictly a full bus situation, that's how we beat Chelsea. Layoff, shot, goal.

We could do that, in less space & still get a shot off if the players were in tune with it. We seem to do it as more of an afterthought, rater than part of the plan & we don't often require a save, from that position.

I recon Barca, with Messi etc will often hit the target from a similar position, when all defenders are back. Not necessarily as a plan, but just what they do naturally, if they are not getting through, having Messi rather than Silva. That danger threat can have the effect of making a defender come out, & in that case Messi one twos in behind them.

Going bck to the days of Mancini, we were in numerous situations passing the ball sideways in front of a parked bus, & someone like Adam Johnson (spit) comes on & hits a shot in & you wonder why it took 80 mins.

We have a lot of players now, who can shoot. was the first player to really try it, Otamendi ? Should be a lot more imo.

Like that.

KDB nearly scored one as well.

More.
