Jimmy Armfield

Sad news. A couple of City connections that quickly came to mind - he was one of the All Star XI (along with Stanley Matthews & Tom Finney) who played a combined City/Utd XI for Bert Trautmann's testimonial. He was also Leeds manager in that famous 3rd Round FA Cup tie where we won 2-1 and there was a pitch invasion by Leeds fans.

Unlike the cretins such as Savage, Lawrenson & Mills, it was always a pleasure to listen to Jimmy's thoughtful and articulate insights as a co-commentator.

Very well said!

Will be sadly missed.

I was told years ago off some old guy from Moston that JA was a big City fan growing up. This old guy knew his dad apparently. I liked him as a commentor, unlike that t*at Green, who never had a nice word to say about us. RIP.

He was first choice RB until he was injured. Never got his place back. RIP, a fine player and captain.

He was also captain. If he hadn't been injured before the World Cup, it would have been him rather than Bobby Moore lifting the trophy.

He did everything in the game. Player, manager, journalist, commentator, etc.

Led us to the Third Division title in 1972/73 and built a team including Peter Reid, Sam Allardyce, etc.

Left us for Leeds when Cloughie was sacked and then led them to the European Cup Final, beating Barcelona on the way.

One of the few pundits/co-commentators who always came across as being both fair and incredibly knowledgeable. 5Live will be much worse off without him.
