millwall game at maine road that brought the banning of fans

I remember talking to a good mate of mine who used to like a bit of fisticuffs on a match day in late 70's to mid 80's. I think I remember him saying we took Chelsea on London bridge, I may be wrong. Although I was chatting to a Chelsea fan a few years ago who said City gave it them proper, never mentioned where though. I've never gone to games looking for agro. My mate was one of about 35 or so who got nicked at Notts County away. He went down for 15 months, well known amongst our former Cool Cats n' Govoners.

Still nuts nowadays and he's in his early 50's!
Nearly got us a good hiding a few years ago when watching OT Derby, pub was full of rags. I think we may if been only blues in there. After about 8 pints or so of cider, I could see the cogs in his head going around. His nickname is nightmare for a reason. All of a sudden he blurted "right you rag c***s, any one of you says a bad word about City, I'll take the f*ckin' lot of you!" I put my arm arm around him and told him to STFU sharpish.
20 odd year old rags against a couple of middle aged blues would of been no contest, but he's still nuts, especially on derby days.

Glad that football violence is rare nowadays, no place for it at all in today's society IMO.

I went up in the stand facing the dugouts at the swamp(bacon face stand?)when Rosler chipped Shmeichel in the FACup,nearly got killed.
Know a lad (rag) who was one of their top boys at the time, sorted it for me.

January 2010 was the last time I was there in the league cup semi. Got a proper good hiding off 4 TAU for just minding my own business whilst waiting for my mates outside. Slammed me in a cell under K stand and charged me for d&d. Hadn't even had a drink for 4 hours! Never going to that shit hole again. Cops must of been rag ****s.

Millwall brought a huge firm and got off the train at Stockport.

they had a scuffle with some Reds at Stockport station.

When they arrived in Mcr they were heavily escorted to the ground.

In the ground they threw seats and got them thrown back.

A massive City firm gathered outside after and had scuffles with the police, who succeeded in pushing them all the way back to Wilmslow Road. Millwall were kept in the grounmd then escored back down Lloyd Street.

City's lads made their way to town and smashed up some of the shops in Rusholme.

Attempts were made by both sides to meet but it never happened.

City later had a battle with United when they got back from Forest.

That's basically it.

I wasn’t aware of the off with United but the rest of it pretty much squares with my recollection of the events that day.

I remember being up and out quite early with a few mates. Breakfast in the OK Diner in Levenshulme folllowed by our first scoops of the day in the Wheatsheaf. We were playing pool in there and it was still quite early - probably just after 11 - when we saw 2 dark blue police vans speeding up the A6. What confused us was that they were heading in the opposite direction of town and it was a few seconds before the realisation hit us that Millwall must’ve pitched up in Stockport.

A short while later we moved on closer to the ground and for a change we decided to drink in The Denmark. We got in there and there were probably only about a dozen or so people in. We got our drinks and headed to the back of the pub. One bloke came walking down to check us out and nodded when he saw my mate’s City pin badge. It was that kind of day - everyone seemed to be on edge even if they had no desire to get involved in any trouble.

After The Denmark we went to The Clarence which was one of our more regular match day haunts. It was hammered and we went in the back room. Someone said Millwall were being escorted from town and reckoned there were 800 of them in the escort. The 2 police spotters - Cliff and Stan - came in and we got talking to them. They said there was that many of them that if every copper on duty and every City fan in The Clarence mobbed up together it probably still wouldn’t be enough to deal with them. We thought they might get escorted past the pub but the police took them a different route to avoid any potential flashpoints.

What happened inside the ground has been well covered and being in the North Stand near their lot it was lively to say the least. The main missile throwing took place in the 2nd half but there was a bit of it just before half time and my mate copped a nice cut on his forehead. After Spink’s fuck up for our opening goal I didn’t even see the other 2 goals as by then it was turning toxic and I only had eyes for what was going on to my left. My mates had disappeared by then - I think they moved to the back of the stand to get a better view of it kicking off. I’m not ashamed to admit that as soon as the final whistle went I was straight out of there and on my toes. Up Claremont Road then Dicky Road and onto a 192. I was back in my local quicker than I’d ever been before while my mates were still wandering around and seeing if they could catch any action.

Later that night a United supporting mate of ours came in the pub. He was heavily involved with their mob at the time and gave us a detailed account of the confrontation at Stockport between United and Millwall en route to their game at Forest. He saw the gash on my mate’s forehead and asked if he’d got it at the game to which he said “Nice one!” when it was confirmed that he had.

Posting that makes me realise how much I miss the pubs around Maine Road.

Brilliant post.

This thread has reminded me why I went to so few football matches in the 1980s.

hahaha you wuss, it was great fun after the game! I understand why so many fked off sharpish to be fair, it was mental that day.

Where were you in the North Stand? I was Block R, quite probable we have met in the past, used to use the Clarence, Sherwood and Albert a lot. You are right about the pubs, shame not so many good ones around now, except in town. Funnily enough, only ever went in the Denmark once, and that was on derby day one time, as we heard united had plotted up in there, I'd have got away with being one of them, with a southern accent ;o)

I didn't know I knew how to post videos

You clearly can, but having watched it, I'm not sure you were able to edit them back in the day.
It reminded me of my chart tapes with some shit DJ interrupting one song and the next one abruptly starts as I was a second too late pressing play and record.

The thing that shocked me was the reference to the internet as a tool for arranging the rumble. If it wasn't for that, it seemed like 30 years ago.

Or was it because we were shit?
I was living in Coventry, then Leicester and then Edinburgh. I can only recall attending two City matches then; the FA Cup semifinal at Villa Park and an away match at Coventry. I couldn’t raise the cash for train journeys and also in protest at the fences that Thatcher insisted on putting up. After Hillsborough, the clubs ripped them down and I started to attend matches then.
