Just before Liverpool went on their major two decade run of success from 1972 onwards, City and Liverpool had won exactly the same number of trophies:
City - 2 First Divisions, 4 FA Cups, 1 FL Cup, 1 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, 3 Charity Shields (11)
Liverpool - 7 First Divisions, 1 FA Cup, 3 Charity Shields (11).
There were four clubs (City, Liverpool, Newcastle and Wolves) who’d all won 11 trophies who were the joint 6th most successful clubs in England behind United, Arsenal, Everton, Villa and Spurs.
If City are a shit club with no history, what were Liverpool for the first 80 years of their existence? The reality is, City we’re up there with Liverpool throughout football history up to that point, both great clubs.
From the late 70s our fortunes split and we went on different paths but our paths have reconvened since. With City having our own decade of success, reaching the levels and even overtaking things that Liverpool did at their height as a club in the 70s and 80s. Let’s see where we both are when our major run of success comes to an end in another decade or so.
