I always thought the 'We're not really here' song was about the official attendances being nowhere near the amount of people in the ground. In the late 80's i went to a at least two games and was unable to get in because "it's sold out". Only to read in the Pink that the official attendance was 20 odd thousand. I always got in, but tried the official routes first. Weird times.The declared attendance was always bollocks but the Charlton game was that full that from the Kippax you couldn't see any steps in the other stands they were full of fans sat on them.
